I find it revealing when people mock where I came from, & say theyre going to send me back to waitressing, as if that is bad or shameful.
Its as though they think being a member of Congress makes you intrinsically better than a waitress.
But our job is to serve, not rule.

I think it's the elected officials, especially at the national level, that end up with that sense of entitlement.

(12,489 posts)Long term politicians gain too much power. While it may serve THEIR constituents well, that power can also be to the detriment of the rest of the country. Look at Mitch McConnell; he's from KY. A state with only 4 million or so residents. But he's the most powerful person in the Senate mostly by way of longevity.
But it has to be term limits for ALL instead of state by state because then we just end up with some states having all the power

(37,648 posts)When will we start seeing tweets by Pelosi about Pelosi, by Durbin about Durbin, by Angus King about Angus King....
I understand why she felt the need to respond, but if the reps start responding to every irksome comment about them, it'll be a huge distraction.
It's so easy for the opposition to distract us (or to be more accurate, the freshmen) from the things that matter. That tweet could have been spent on a fact about climate change, or the rise of neo-Nazism, or the poor jobs performance in February.

LiberalLovinLug
(14,164 posts)Democrats have either thought the MSM was on their side and would come rushing into the news room shuffling papers, to give the other side, or correct it.
That or Democrats are under the illusion that everyone can see they are the correct, moral, nice folks or that they will all do their due diligence and research themselves
While the Republicans and their propaganda catapult just sit back and feed off of the non-response as confirmation for their preconditioned audience.
And then Democrats predictably are then confronted by the MSM because of no pushback. And so while the usual defensive Dems are forced on air to emote their "excuses", the Rs are already ranting about the next baby-eating conspiracy. Rinse and repeat.

(6,810 posts)The Republicans have been rolling Democrats for decades and now Millennials are starting to enter Congress with a completely alien mindset, backing the few older statesmen-women that have been firebrands, and folks just do not know how to deal with it. Democrats aren't on their backs, exposing their soft bellies and whimpering submissively? They're actively fighting back as a Party not just scattered individuals? What? Even on the left we've seen people (even in this thread) who simply cannot fathom that there are different ways of meeting Republican smears and lies other than "turning the other cheek" ...so it can get punched too. You *can* punch back. Harder and with the backing facts and sincerely-held views (sometimes you will be well-meaning but embarrassingly clumsy in how you state them re:Omar). Pelosi and other established members have been struggling, trying to balance their life-long experiences with what the new blood is bringing in, but this session of Congress has quickly shown that together ...They've Got This.

And what perfect timing (which you also pointed out so well) - being there to support those that have been in the trenches putting up the good fight - and now, supporting OUR base - WE'RE NOT TAKING IT ANYMORE!!!!!!

(6,810 posts)He is a cantankerous old man and is unofficially our Spirit Animal. He and other rare politicians (like Franken or AOC or that state legislator in Arkansas(?) that just burned the chamber down over a Stand Your Ground bill that died later that day because fuck, no one wanted her to Stand Her Ground on their asses lol) care little for appearances and more about the positions and ideals they genuinely hold dear, and they don't give a good goddamn how you feel about them or that or how they state it. Sure, we Youngs might have the reputation of being image-obsessed selfie fairies, but we're none-too-keen on being bullshitted and lied to. We don't mind appearances, obviously, but if we find out you're a shitty person doing us dirty? Oh honey...
We Millennials and the as-yet-unnamed-generation-I'm-calling-the Aughts just reaching voting age have been witnessing Republicans use Democrats, and liberals/progressives in general, as punching bags Our. Entire. Lives. particularly those of us coming of age during the Clinton years (and the Obama years for the Aughts) and the high dudgeon circus Republicans put on ... over a blowjob. My political awakening actually started in 4th grade during Bush Sr. (too young to remember what a shitbag Reagan was) but politics of the 90s left an impression on us all. Things definitely started coming off the rails when Newt "My wife is dying of cancer, time to cheat on her. My new wife is an old hag, time to cheat on her. My new new wife Callista is one of the Martians from Mars Attacks! so jackpot..." Gingrich unleashed his (Murder-for-Hire) Contract With America and poisoned the fuck out of everything, forever. I mean, the Reagan years were bad with him making an unholy alliance with Christian fundamentalcases, but that could only get them so far and Newt was willing and able to deliver more barbarism to American politics. Bush Jr. was a dry run, and boy were we fucked dry. The Obama years gave them time to breastfeed the baby monster they were spawning. Trump was the Main Event. And it's blowing up in their faces. And everyone else's. And is probably going to get us all killed.
Millennials and the Aughts are not amused. We and our children and grandchildren are going to be the ones suffering and dying from the worst yet to come. And we're painfully, existentially aware that we may literally be the final generations. Our fury is righteous. Many in older generations get it too, but have been caught in the same cycles as their generational contemporaries. But they do get it: Help or get the fuck out of the way. We literally do not have time for this shit anymore. The Olds are going to start dying off, taking their experiences and focus with them, and us Youngs have precious little time before the biosphere starts unraveling around us, taking us with it. We won't have the time to "figure it out." Action needs to happen NOW while older generations are still with us. Pelosi and others get that, that's why she isn't throwing AOC or Omar under the bus. She's tired of this shit too and recognizes the energy of the younger generations must be tapped into and channeled if Humanity is to have any future beyond this century. The slow and measured ways she's comfortable with haven't been terribly useful or effective for a few decades because Republicans just shit all over everyone and everything we've ever held dear. And again, they're probably going to get us all killed.
Bringing this back to AOC and Taking-None-of-Your-Shitism, it can be summed thusly: I don't have the time for your shit, but I'll take the time to tell you why you're shit.
