Rachel Maddow Shows How Trump Is Setting Himself Up For His Biggest Crash and Burn Yet
https://www.politicususa.com/2019/03/20/rachel-maddow-trump-documents.html
Posted on Wed, Mar 20th, 2019 by Jason Easley Rachel Maddow Shows How Trump Is Setting Himself Up For His Biggest Crash and Burn Yet Rachel Maddow showed why Trump is setting himself up for failure by refusing to comply and turn over anything to Democratic investigators. Maddow said: In 1973 president Nixon tried to make history when he decided he tried not to hand over the congress anything that he did not want them to see that pertained to Watergate, specifically the white house tapes that they had learned of the existence of. That forced a subpoena on the white house for those tapes. Nixon defied the subpoena. That ended up in court. The special prosecutor’s demand for those materials, those tapes ended up going all the way to the U.S. Supreme court. And this is really famous. I mean, let’s say you only know three things about Richard what are the three things you know? You know like Nixon had to resign the presidency, had a dog named Checkers, Supreme Court made him hand over the tapes, right? Even if you only know three things about Richard Nixon, even if you know nothing else about Richard Nixon, you know that unanimously in U.S. v. Nixon, the president was not allowed to say no, no, you can’t visit. I say you can’t.
But that no, no, you can’t have it policy today was rolled out by the trump administration. They plan to give no documents, no materials to make no witnesses available. And, again, we’ll see how that works out. Honestly, in the courts, we know how it will work out. This has been tested before. This has been tried before. It doesn’t work out well for a president who tries this. But in the meantime, while we are starting down the path to get there, in the meantime, if that is where this is heading, the speed at which this is all going to unfold and how everybody looks in the history books when it’s all over will depend in large part on whether Republicans in Congress, members of the president’s only party in Congress can summon the energy to care about a president who is trying to not only do this to Democrats but trying to do this to them as well. Link to tweet Trump’s Just Say No Strategy Will Blow Up In His Face There is zero long-term planning in this administration. The Trump administration is fighting the document requests because Trump is stalling for time. Trump is trying to use his presidential power to obstruct investigations with delay tactics until after the 2020 election. Trump is hoping that he wins reelection, Republicans win back the House, and all of these investigations go away in January 2021. Presidents who have their backs against the wall and are fighting for the survival of their administration think about survival in terms of days and weeks, not years. Trump is hoping that if he stalls long enough, the House Democrats will go away, but we already know how this chapter of the story ends. Trump is going to get subpoenaed and he is going to lose. What should have been normal government oversight will be turned into a spotlight-stealing showdown, as the nation will watch Trump spectacularly crash and burn.

1. Maddow needs to book ex-senator Bob Kerry on her show so he can lambast trump
with his bone spurs and cowardice to serve our country.....that would be an episode worth watching for sure

2. What I find highly curious is here you have MSNBC's Top Rated Host, and the following day, MSNBC
rarely if ever, refer to topics she has covered/broken the night before. The Trump 2005 Tax Returns being an exception.
One would have thought, here you have the top rated host in cable news, and you barely refer to her. Odd. |

17. I'd guess theyd tell you no, they don't...it's the 'network' equalivant of Plausible Deniability
'well we didn't report on that stuff cause it's just dirty liberal gossip, there's no proof. See, we're VERY fair and balanced'.
Umm racheal proved this on her show last night. 'i don't watch racheal. LOVE HER, SOO Great, isn't she?, But again, don't watch her.' they're mostly worthless hacks. I'm wondering when Racheal is going to decide shes made quite enough contract money ( no really and thank you, but no, thank you), and go decide to do investigative journalism for Frontline or HBO or something even MORE useful and biased. |

6. You are right, it is odd. And it's been like that since this
nightmare began.

4. I wait for 9:00 PM every night
I get into bed with Ice Cream and am ready for another wonderful hour with Rachel. I miss her when she takes off but understand she has a stressful job and needs the rest.

5. His strategy has been exposed, and I have no idea why it's not getting
nearly the attention that it should. The statue of limitations for federal crimes is only 5 years, so he clearly sees the opportunity to "run out the clock" by getting re-elected, and then using the "sitting President cannot be indicted" concept to completely avoid any legal consequence for his actions.
I'm not saying it's guaranteed that things will turn out this out, but it seems more than obvious that this is the course he intends to pursue. |

7. Not necessarily
Crimes involving financial institutions and espionage have 10 year statute of limitations.

10. I've heard this from more than one seemingly sharp person in panel
discussions on CNN & MSNBC, and also found this:
There is no statute of limitations for federal crimes punishable by death, nor for certain federal crimes of terrorism, nor for certain federal sex offenses. Prosecution for most other federal crimes must begin within five years of the commitment of the offense. There are exceptions.

11. Supposedly, if Trump is indicted on a crime, the limitattions clock stops until he is out of office.

Doesn't this argument sort of all hinge on John Roberts following precedent?

The courts are now stacked by Trumpasses who are even more craven and partisan than Nixon-appointed judges. New territory here

14. Roberts is an odd duck--but he wants to protect his legacy
it all hinges on him in the end. He's a smart guy and I don't think he wants to be in the rogue's gallery with Trump
