It seems trump has shown us the failures of norms and traditions. After this, if we make it through, we need to safeguard democracy a little bit more.

(115,674 posts)In some states (like mine) it's an elected position, and it can become extremely political. At the federal level it's best not to go that route. Even though the president appoints the AG, which means it's political in some regard, direct election of that position would make it worse. Also, it's in the Constitution, in the Appointments Clause, so it won't change any time soon.

(6,110 posts)so the person can do the job without fear of getting fired by the president. Since it would have to be confirmed by the senate, preferably 60-40 or better, there is less chance of packing the justice.

I'm not sure what to do about the AG. Have to give it some thought.
It's kind of like a president providing his tax returns .. you used to not have to think about it. But now many of the kinds of things we've had to consider over the last 25 years are more partisan less country first and were not as much of an issue previously.
