The future of the American economy is Hispanic and female

https://www.cnn.com/2019/04/02/economy/equal-pay-day-hispanic-female-wage-gap/index.html

New York (CNN Business)Tuesday commemorates Equal Pay Day, which represents the number of days into the year that American women would have to work in order to catch up to what men made the year before.

But for Hispanic women, that day won't come until November.
The wage gap for women who identify as "Hispanic or Latino" is larger than that of any other racial or ethnic group tracked by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics. At the median, they earn 63 cents for every dollar American men earn, compared to 81 cents for women overall.

While the wage gap is a blunt metric and doesn't account for differences in occupation between men and women, it has nevertheless become a powerful symbol of how far women remain behind men in terms of earning power.
In the US economy, Hispanic women have long earned some of the lowest wages among women — but now, there are signs they could start to catch up quickly.

About 70% of Hispanic and Latina women between ages 25 and 54, have a job or are looking for one. While that's still lower than the broader population — about 83% of all prime-age working people participate in the labor force — Latinas are now the only demographic group to surpass their previous record for labor force participation in the early 2000s.

And with a median age of 29 years, almost a decade younger than the average US woman, Hispanic women's earning power has a lot of room to run.

There are some good graphs at the link. US Citizens are diversifying at a pace and scale that makes Trump supporters very uncomfortable. Part of the reason people will be surprised by the Asian numbers is the perpetual foreigner myth. Millions of Indian-American US citizens are still assumed to be H-1Bs.

Enjoy this quote from someone, but probably not Mark Twain:
"It ain’t what you don’t know that gets you into trouble. It’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so."

In our community too.

Some of the primary industries here are medicine, education, and agriculture.

I grew up in a place that was 99% white. There's no way in hell I'd ever go back to a place like that. I've lived all my adult life, and we raised our children, in places where most of the people are not white. That was a very deliberate decision.

"Happy Days" 1950s white U.S. America wasn't any kind of utopia, not even for the white people living in it. They just didn't know it.

My parents are artists. They were both working in Hollywood when they met and married. When my mom got pregnant it was expected that she would stop working to be a full time mom, have more babies, and she did... as long as she could stand it.

When my dad retired with a good union pension my parents moved away and are now full time artists living in a place with a diverse population.

Equal housing and other civil rights became the law while I was a kid, but the places we lived were kept white by police who harassed people who were not white, real estate agents and lenders who were not responsive to people who were not white, hostility to people who were not white in shops and restaurants, etc... Much of this from people who claimed to be "colorblind."

When my parents bought a bigger house they sold our old house to a very nice family, black dad, white mom, and some of the neighbors went ape shit, people we'd previously thought were nice. The people across the street immediately put their house up for sale because they thought this was a sign the neighborhood was about to go to hell. They were wrong about that.

Anyone who puts their house up for sale because the neighborhood is getting more diverse, is probably not going to be a good neighbor. And it opens up more housing for folks who want to live there, so win-win.
