Trump needs Nancy Pelosi, his biggest adversary, to help pass revamped NAFTA

Trump needs Nancy Pelosi, his biggest adversary, to help pass revamped NAFTA

"So far, Trump and Pelosi have not met to discuss the pact’s future. But Trump’s top negotiators have been unusually conciliatory — taking pains to avoid confrontation, praising Pelosi for her openness, considering her suggestions and thanking her for letting them make direct pitches to moderate and freshman Democratic lawmakers whose support is critical.

“Speaker Pelosi has been very cooperative with [U.S. Trade Representative] Bob Lighthizer, very helpful in allowing him access to her conference,” Larry Kudlow, Trump’s top economic advisor, told reporters. “He spoke to the whole Democratic conference, which is very cool.”

Trump, always the biggest unknown and at times the greatest threat to his own administration’s strategy, has refrained from attacking Pelosi personally thus far, making her a rare exception for a powerful opponent. It’s uncertain whether he can continue that restraint. On other issues that Democrats have blocked, such as the border wall and an Obamacare repeal, Trump has not held back his attacks.

Some in the White House are arguing to put more pressure on Pelosi from the outside, believing she will not hand Trump a victory on a top political issue unless forced to by moderate Democrats representing closely divided House districts."

This worries me. Giving trump a NAFTA victory ticks off another item on his "promise" list for his base - you know - along with things like the wall, which they believe is actually being built now, and along with mueller's non-report that has been released in such a way so as to prove, in their minds, trump's innocence. No collusion! LOFL

Why don't we play it like the repubicans did when President Obama was in the White House? How is it that the repubicans seem to rule whether they're in the majority or the minority?

Giving in on NAFTA, and by giving in I mean negotiating at all, is a huge mistake, IMO. Giving trump aides access to moderate and freshperson Democrats - I just don't know what to say.

Everything that seemed at one time totally insane now seems to be normalized one small step at a time.

do horse-trading. Trump's modus operandi is to dig up dirt and blackmail and coerce.

While Nancy Pelosi has no skeletons in her closet, that doesn't stop Trump from doing business that way.

Whatever Dems do, Trump will spin it and his brain-dead supporters will believe his spin.

If Pelosi can get changes to NAFTA that actually help American workers, then Dems can also tout that success in their campaigns.

Democrats need to demonstrate that they actually give a shit about American workers.* Digging in on this and refusing to make changes that are seen as improvements by the working class in the reddish-purple states, means definitely losing in 2020.

* Yes, they do. We need some purple states to win. And this stuff matters to the lives of voters there.

is reached.

I would like to see American workers realize Democrats are best for them but it's taken decades to brainwash labor into believing the opposite. We don't have time to win them back. We have to do what the repubicans do; energize our own base.

We outnumber them. How about we give our voters a reason to come to the polls instead of hoping for some reddish-purple miracle?
