Oops! Lori Loughlin "thought the DA was bluffing"

a source tells E! News, she neglected to join the 13 parents (including fellow actress Felicity Huffman) and one university athletic coach who agreed to plead guilty to the charges of mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.

"She has been in complete denial and thought maybe she could skate by," the source explains. "She refused to accept any jail time and thought the DA was bluffing. She was adamant she wouldn't do any jail time."

clients can be tricky.

It has to be their decision, you can't railroad them into it. But you can heavily encourage. Part of being a good defense attorney has nothing to do with your work in the courtroom, but your ability to get your client to see what is truly in their best interest.

Sometimes, the right answer is plead early, plead often. Now, the other problem we have with the criminal defense system, is we have too many folks pleading guilty because they don't have a choice (or good representation). But that's certainly not the case here.

Her attorneys probably told her the way to go, she was stubborn and refused, and so they are stuck making a sandwich out of manure and moldy bread.

I once helped represent a guy who was in denial all the way through sentencing...and once he got a godwaful number of years did he start to recognize that maybe he should have taken some responsibility. Since he sexually assaulted two children and got one pregnant, his tears did not move me a whole lot.

How do people justify such behavior simply because they have "religious faith?" I know that religion and particularly Christianity has been used to justify all kinds of things (especially in the time of Trump), but really... How do these people believe that that gives them a "pass"?

In other words, pay your fucking taxes and obey the laws that have been set by government. Take it up with God, spiritually and eternally, if you don't like it.

The prosecutors are threatening 20 years in jail for what exactly? She paid extra money to get her kid in a PRIVATE school.

If this goes to court the states case is going to shit, because the private school in question (USC) is not going to go on record about how ANY kids get in their school.

Eta here's the thing a lot of people don't seem to understand, elite PRIVATE colleges have been taking "bribes" for decades. If this goes to court the entire university system (including all the athletes) are fucked, because the school will refuse to discuss how ANY student was admitted. That pretty much guts the states case. The prosecutors are bluffing, and trying to intimidate them with these completely ridiculous charges.

Her kids faked their way onto an athletic team. This now involves more than just the college. The NCAA has been coming down on schools, coaches and parents for giving/accepting gifts or monetary assistance. They can make decisions not just about one sport but an entire school's athletic department.

If push comes to shove and the NCAA starts making threats USC sports can be in a world of trouble. In their minds, a coach of a minor sport, no matter how highly ranked the team is, and a D list actress do not matter compared to anything that could jeopardize their athletic department as a whole-especially if it trickles down and has even a minimal effect of football.

Probably every kid on the BB and football team was admitted for sports, not merit. Every one of them took spots in the school that they didn't deserve. Further, schools are admitting kids based on race, but they don't want to talk about either.

Her kids faked their way onto a team. Frankly, so what? It's a private school that can admit or not anyone they want. This was a private to private transaction, it's none of the government's business.

Eta the ncaa is also a private org and will also not go on the record about anything.

A local kid is currently attending USC. He is doing so with scholarships, a Pell grant and a Stafford. I know this because I know his parents and we've discussed financial aid.

Once they accepted federal aid they were open to investigation. The government has every right. If they don't like it they can refuse any further federal aide and pay back all previous aide.

Also SC is not long off penalties that included lack of institutional control.

Lynn Swan's ass puckered up when Aunt Becky didn't take the deal. I believe them may be one of the schools in the Nike/Basketball payments. It could hit the fan for them again.

They're being fingered by sources as part of the Nike fiasco.

I live in Missouri. We are smack dab in SEC and Big 12 land. The Nike scandal is mentioned often around here and there is no way investigations are complete. The last thing any school wants is additional interest by the NCAA. USC and UCLA will be of interest. No AD wants them sniffing around and Aunt Becky doesn't have the money to stop anything from the NCAA.

with a plea offer.

To be honest, after sitting in a noisy crowded jury selection waiting area with little food or water for an eternity and getting paid $2.00 an hour, I'm inclined toward a harsh verdict.

I'd be especially so in one of these "affluenza" cases.

She needs a better lawyer.

she is walking around laughing, smiling and waving at fans like she is on some kind of publicity tour. She shows no sense of remorse and isn't even trying to fake it. You get the impression she thinks this is all a big joke and that she has absolute confidence that someone like her would never really pay a penalty for what she has done. Her sense of entitlement is nauseating.

I didn't even really know who she was when this story first broke (besides some D-list actress), but there was something about her I couldn't stand. It figures that she is a Trump supporter and a fake Christian.

At least Felicity Huffman is taking this seriously and is remorseful (or is at least pretending to be).

Lori Laughlin may have gotten an assist in her defense -- good old-fashioned ignorance -- 'cause her daughters almost perfectly fit the mold with how women's rowing teams recruit.

An ad for the USC women's crew team popped up on campus over the weekend -- and we for sure thought it couldn't have been real ... seeing how tone-deaf it came off and the implications behind it, considering Olivia Jade and Isabella's "no experience."

...

But, here's the thing ... in Lori's case, prosecutors have to prove criminal intent to seal a conviction. Sources connected with Lori's defense claim Lori didn't know the $500k payoff was shady, even if the plan was to pretend her daughters were crew-team ready. The poster would seem to help Lori and her husband, both of whom are charged with multiple felonies, because crew experience doesn't seem to be essential.

Prosecutors are trying to squeeze Lori and her husband to cop a plea, but our sources say their lawyers believe they have a real shot at getting a not guilty verdict if push comes to shove.

most folks aren't going to have experience, and if they can get someone of the right athletic talent they can teach them the rest.

It's why track stars still get drafted by the NFL sometimes.

Or why basketball stars end up as high level Tight Ends (see e.g. Jimmy Graham).
