This woman is a hero. A nurse in Texas is documenting the epidemic of women murdered

by their fathers, husbands, ex-boyfriends, cousins, sons, neighbors and strangers. Her name is Dawn Wilcox and she has spent much of the last two years compiling details about the lives and deaths of women and girls killed by men in the US. The tally for 2018 is 1,600. On the Women Count USA Facebook page she has recounted lives of 6,000 women now dead, but thanks to her, not forgotten.

From The Guardian: ]

To Wilcox, the women on her list are victims of an epidemic unseen or ignored, the result of societal attitudes that see women’s lives as the property of men. Pushing back against that means documenting the victims, the impact of male violence, and the stories behind the numbers

1. How amazing that she is doing this work!

I wondered why she started the project and found it in the Guardian article:

She started the project after the killings of Cecil the lion and Harambe the gorilla. There was such outrage over the animals’ deaths, and while Wilcox is an animal lover, she didn’t understand why there wasn’t the same level of concern for murdered women. “People are starting petitions and they’re marching and I’m like I just heard about three women killed today, what about them?”

2. It is so true-- an epidemic, but one thousands of years old-

Men have to start understanding how profoundly this affects all women, and why women "over-react" (by some views) to male displays of "power and privilege". It's sensible in the extreme for women to know that there are many men (not most, but we can't always tell who) who will resort to violence, and the lack of interest by the justice system and the culture just make this more tense.

Dawn's a heroine-- someone who notices and cares.

3. This, like "Gun Fail", is such an important use of the power of crowdsourcing to track -

disparate information.

With thousands of communities in the country, many without a local news source, we'd never know if someone doesn't take the time to track.

4. Fortunately the Dem House is helping out this week.

"The House just overwhelmingly approved a reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, the United States’ landmark legislation funding programs meant to prevent and prosecute abuse against women. It did so in the face of staunch opposition from the National Rifle Association, which argued that a new provision in the bill barring dating partners convicted of abuse and stalking from owning firearms went too far."
"There’s very discrete provisions that relate to protecting women’s safety. And they’re against it,” Pelosi said, according to Roll Call. “I don’t see that it has much impact on the passage of the bill in the House of Representatives.”

6. there is now a TV channel

that has shows all day about murders. (ID - Investigative Discovery) Most of the victims are women. Some are tossed onto the side of the road like garbage, buried in shallow graves, and covered with leaves.

I am so glad someone is bringing this to light. It is accepted that some men will kill some women - for whatever crazy reason is in their head. I am not aware of any attempts to change this in our society on a political level. Good for Dawn Wilcox.

Growing up, our city had the Green River Killer and Ted Bundy. But there were individual crimes also taking place. This is just sick.

7. I am glad that someone is bringing attention to this.

It happens much too often and is not talked about enough. If I hear one more man say "but men are victims too!" I am going to scream. Almost every day I get up and hear about another woman or girl who has gone missing or is dead, or near dead and the perp is a man 99% of the time. I am so sick of it.

Thank you Dawn for doing this important work!
