hijabs during the next session.

(4,066 posts)I was originally against the change in rules for the wearing of headdresses like her hijab because I was ignorant and wrong (I'm a Democrat, not a Republican. So I can admit this). I thought the change was to satisfy only one religion.
The change in rules was far more inclusive of all peoples/religions. It was not made just for her.
I think it would be great for all women to wear a hijab just like they wore white in support of causes.

(2,380 posts)The hijab is a religious symbol and, for many, including ex-Muslims, a symbol of female oppression. Would you wear a yamulke to support someone who happened to be Jewish? A habit to support a Catholic woman?

(4,066 posts)I got my post hidden when she was elected and the rules thing first came up. My post was about not changing the rules because it only supported the oppression of women to allow the hijab in the House. I lost on that front so I'm moving on.
I think we must support rep Omar now. At this point I see a very different issue. Wearing the hijab to support her, personally, and to oppose the personal attacks on HER, is not the same as supporting the wearing of a hijab in general.
Yes, I still believe the wearing of any sort of garb by women that is not required of men is oppression of women. I think it's wrong.
In this special case, though, I think it is proper to do so to show support for her personally and specifically. Not for the custom with which I agree with you is just part of oppression of women.

(4,187 posts)If youre so motivated by the idea of showing solidarity by wearing a hijab, why dont you wear a hijab yourself, rather than telling women how to dress themselves?
There is absolutely no reason why men cannot cover their heads with a headscarf. Indeed, a man doing so would communicate clearly that the hijab does not have to be about female oppression.

(4,602 posts)Its a symbol of oppression. She wears it willingly, great. But its not a practice Im interested in my party encouraging.

(47,399 posts)As a woman, I find it offensive that a religion requires women to cover their heads. I appreciate that she does it willingly and she looks beautiful in it, but I've seen too many religions that expected certain dress codes for women, but none for the men.
There are Christian sects where the women are expected to dress like it is 1890, bouffant hair, long skirts, and no makeup. It was like a uniform that always set them apart. The men, however, wear contemporary clothes and could fit in anywhere.
No, something that was meant to be oppression for women, should not be imitated or encouraged, though she should be free to wear it if that is what she wants. There certainly are plenty of other ways to show one's support for Omar.

(6,261 posts)What I'm referring to applies to both men and women and all religions.
Unlike Islam, I'm not talking about something that applies only to keep women in their place.

(7,670 posts)To wear when it comes to religious headress. Do you not see the irony there. The fact that it wouldnapply to both men and women is irrelevent.

(4,238 posts)of oppression helps anything. Just because Ilhan wears this out of choice/Stockholm Syndrome doesnt mean the party has to lurch and support this nonsense.

(6,930 posts)Good on her if she wants to willingly do so, but no way no how for any woman who makes her own decisions on how she dresses.

(9,696 posts)It's a horrible idea, and not really up for debate. I certainly wouldn't want to see my Dem Congress critters wearing a religious head covering "in solidarity."

(4,187 posts)Why does it have to be the female members?
As a society, we need to stop thinking its shameful for men to dress or act in feminine ways. The whole idea that a man cant wear a skirt or carry a purse or wear a headscarf goes back to the ancient belief that women are inferior and dirty, and that men must stay away from women and their ways as much as possible to avoid sullying themselves. Even the hijab is designed to hide womens hair and body from men so they wont be distracted by women and will be able to think loftier thoughts.
If a man really feels solidarity with Rep Omar, let him wear a hijab. That would be a good way to show respect for Muslim women and reject misogyny at the same time.

(9,497 posts)Do you know how courageous it is for a woman to dress and go out in America like this? I remember waiting for my bus soon after 9/11 and the young Muslim girl who always got off at that stop, descended the stairs. I felt like the weight of the hate she bore just because her religion has her cover her head. Christians wear crosses, Jews wears Stars of David and they get a pass. Those religions also have places for their women that is in not as high as they regard the men.
I do not follow a religion, but I do feel like those women in New Zealand who wanted to show White Supremacists that we are but one woman.

(12,153 posts)Hijabs are symbols of keeping women "in their place" and submissive to men!
So, hell no!

(45,427 posts)Mormons, Jews, Sikhs, and other faiths also have religious garments. I doubt they would appreciate non-members wearing it, even to show solidarity. Mormons have publicly come out against people mocking their clothing.
Plus evangelical fundies have thrown liberals out of the Christian faith anyway, so none of us Dems are considered Christian anymore.
Merlot
(9,696 posts)Can be worn by either gender and doesn't infringe on religion.

(1,475 posts)I see Ilhan Omar as a woman of great character and strength who will not be intimidated in her quest to uphold the values of a true democracy. Ilhan is proud of her Muslim faith. My O.P. was certainly not meant to exacerbate the situation but to acknowledge that a visibly proud Muslim woman now serving in Congress is a voice for what is right and good and deserves our support.
