The DOJ is handing out CDs of the redacted Mueller Report tomorrow after Barrs spin cycle. CDs. Who even has a compact disc player anymore or an attachment for their computers to read a technology that is as old as cassettes, and DAT tapes?

(146,286 posts)There is backward compatibility.
In reality, though, I think the reference to CDs is just a misunderstanding. Probably what is being delivered is in DVD data format and Bill Barr simply doesn't know the difference.
CD burner drives are very rare these days. So, probably what was created was DVDs.

(25,462 posts)Depending on the file size, it could indeed be on CDs. If it's a small file, there wouldn't be much point in putting it on DVD other than that the discs are probably more readily available.

(146,286 posts)I think it's just a matter of mis-speaking, really. I'd be willing to bet what will be distributed will be on DVD-R discs.
Why would anyone do otherwise, really? I know the government has a lot of obsolete PCs, but issuing this on CD makes no sense at all.
However, even if it were on CDs, anyone's DVD drive will read the data just fine.
TwilightZone
(25,462 posts)They're still readily available.

(128,841 posts)many if not most newer laptops don't even come with either a CD or DVD reader (or burner) built in so that the laptop itself is lighter in weight (would have to buy separately) and makers have moved to use of USB ports (for USB drives/sticks) or SD/microSD cards that can be read by built-in readers (which is pretty much universally including on new laptops).
They are supposed to be making the file available online for download.

(128,841 posts)The desktops usually do but not the laptops (and people have been moving away from desktops lately). The laptops use USB flash drives/sticks or SD card readers now.

Also the report just released - at least according to the NYT.

(2,256 posts)About 10 years ago, there was classified data that was stolen/lost that was on a thumb drive. Since then, they were deemed a security risk and the government mandated the use of cd drives for data. They even spent millions on special shredders that could shred cds as well as paper. I was still in the Army at the time. It was a pain in the ass.
