The GOPee held both chambers - and of course this was the Gingrich/Lumpbaugh era GOPee, radicalized and corrupt to the core.

Like today's.

The only real difference, perhaps, is that there were still a few Rockefeller-style Republicans in office in those days. But they were very much a minority by then.

I know Clinton was so popular and Gingrich lost his house position almost as a result, but forgot the Senate was repub owned too.

That question certainly brought back fond memories.

I had a coworker at the bank in those days who was a staunch Republican (but a very nice guy nonetheless).

We sometimes spent hours after work debating the impeachment over beers.

I'll never forget the 'week of three speakers' - when Gingrich was forced to resign; his replacement, Louisiana's Bob Livingston, resigned the next day after his own infidelities were revealed (by Larry Flynt, no less); and then of course they ended up with Dennis the Menace.

Once he asked me, "today's Thursday, right?" and I answered:

"Well, let me see: who's Speaker today?"

in the Senate to vote not guilty. Some GOP House members lost their seats in the 1998 mid-terms just before impeachment proceedings began.

The Senate didn't have the votes even if all of th Republicans had voted to convict.

Still, 10 crossed over and voted with the Democrats. The point is they didn't have to to get the results they thought were appropriate and stay aligned with the GOP. It's worth noting is that they saw some GOP House members lose seats after they had supported impeachment.
