House Majority Leader: "Impeachment is not worthwhile at this point"

From CNN's Dana Bash

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, a Democrat from Maryland, told CNN there is nothing he has seen so far in special counsel Robert Mueller's report that would change the House leadership strategy to avoid impeachment proceedings.

“Based on what we have seen to date, going forward on impeachment is not worthwhile at this point. Very frankly, there is an election in 18 months and the American people will make a judgement,” Hoyer said.

are having trouble directing Trump. Plutocrat classes. Religious/theocratic right. Neofascists. White supremacists and nationalists. They're so far getting most of what they want through Trump, especially their choices of court appointments, but far from all, and he constantly endangers their plans.

We currently have 200 million registered voters, versus approximately 70 thousand ultrawealthy families, only some of whom approve establishing a faux democracy like Russia's. They fear us. Divide and conquer has been their hugely winning strategy, but they know it could fail. Pence is their man.

in the Senate.

I understand some people want to go through the process regardless, but the reality is that at this time it isn't going to accomplish what some people think it will. People's minds are NOT going to be changed by an impeachment that won't end in a conviction.

However, the House continuing to investigate by calling Mueller and others to testify under oath, can have an impact on things, change the dynamics significantly where impeachment may become feasible, but more importantly expose the corruption of Trump and the republican party

While I understand the concerns around a President Pence, I think the completely corrupted narcissist with the maturity of an 8-year-old is doing unbelievable damage to our culture and our democracy. We're going to be lucky if we get him to ever peacefully transfer power to someone else. I think it would very tough for Pence to beat that.

Trump cannot be removed until enough senate Republicans decide removal is necessary.

We of course have moral duty and big need to get Trump out, but we need to realize what would happen then. What a competent president serving the powers controlling today's right would do and what it might lead to.

Unfortunately, the Mueller report does not seem to include additional reason for removing Pence as well, though he may still be somewhat implicated in obstruction of justice. That may mean, though, that removal is now closer to possible, knowing they would have Pence as the replacement, removing the threat of a President Pelosi that they'd fight with everything they have.

But when you think of Pence, remember the anti-regulation kleptocrat classes he serves (and his League of Conservation Voters lifetime score of 4%!), the hard-core religious right he is a full-fledged member of, the white nationalists determined to reverse 90 years of equality and civil rights laws they loathe, the rise of authoritarianism Pence strongly supports, and the conservative voters reassured and solidifying behind by what they see as a competent, moral leader as 2020 approaches. Pence is their man.

The braying for impeachment TODAY!!111!! is really silly. It will accomplish nothing and it certainly won't remove trump from office. Only conviction in the senate will do that and that won't happen with this senate. In fact, I'm not sure there are enough votes even in the house for impeachment at this point (the democrats don't hold enough seats.)

Only when enough (meaning more) public opinion turns against trump is impeachment worth pursuing, and that will take time. Simply starting impeachment proceedings thinking that "people will wake up when his criminal actions are listed" is nonsense. Now is not the time. There may be no time before the 2020 election.

Remember that a third of the senate is up for reelection in 2020 too.

No doubt about it, our system of governance is broken. For trump to happen should not have been possible. For him to stay in office also should not be happening. The system is broken and will probably never be fixed.

When one considers this reality, one can only assume that Republicans are freer and wield more power than Democrats do.

Republicans had a four-star meltdown over Obama’s tan suit for Christ’s sake.

And now, they’re finally attaining their goals via fascism, which is no surprise, given the rightward drift of the American political landscape over the past 40 years.
