Im hearing D pols saying that impeachment wont lead to a conviction, and that the best course of action is to beat tRump in 2020 and replace him with a D.
OK.
And if he wins, what then? And if he has coattails and the Rs keep the Senate and take back the House, what then? And if the reason they take back the Congress is because D voters stayed home and didnt vote because they were disgusted by the lack of spine exhibited by Ds who let a criminal get away with his crimes, what then?
We cannot assume that tRump will be defeated in 2020. Seems to me that is the riskiest plan we could have, especially when the Russians will no doubt be aiding tRump once again.

(14,118 posts)Can we work toward impeachment AND winning the Senate/holding the House in 2020? I'm all in favor of going for the whole enchilada! Boy could we make tRump wish he'd never been born!

(25,456 posts)At that point, he's basically bulletproof and can do anything he wants.
Unless, of course, we impeach him again post-election, which someone actually suggested in another thread.
Most of the things you're arguing are equally valid in my scenario, if not more so. No one really has any idea how impeachment would play out politically, but we all know it will fail at removal.

(11,949 posts)Those of us who do not favor impeachment do not the he does not deserve it. Of course he does.
But we have to think strategically.

Sounds like a plan.

(11,949 posts)Which means he is still in office, make it more likely we lose the house?
You do understand, the Senate will never convict him. He will be the president in 20 regardless.
If the House Impeaches him the next 18 month will be all about impeachment.
Our plans for Healthcare, workers rights, minimum wage increase and all the things that won us the House in 18 will get no oxygen. And he will still be president.
We need to keep the information about him coming out but focus on passing population legislation to watch the republicans kill it.
Then we keep the house and win the Senate and Presidency in 20
If we impeach and he wins on conviction, which he will, then most Americans will see more partisan shit in Washington and vote for the status quo.
My opinion. Others is good meaning may disagree.

(32,677 posts)Senate and trump? Dream on! More lame excuses. If they fail to hold trump accountable, they will be indistinguishable from the GOP. We can no longer say the GOP did nothing. Democrats will be blamed as well.

(3,635 posts)that could backfire on us, whereas investigations are not, and can take us to places outside of the Mueller focus, into Trump's family and criminalistic background - where Trump is far more vulnerable and could face state charges.
Impeachment also would put Dems in swing states/districts at risk by forcing them to take a position on it. Investigations don't do this and offer House Dems a way to weaken Trump as much as possible for 2020.

(46,166 posts)Rachel Maddow listed his transgressions and the expiration date for going after him for each. They all expire in 2022.
So if Russia gets him elected again, Dems don't impeach now and also lose the House majority in 2020 then Plan B is to accept pounding sand.
