Anyone else experience what seems to be a new scam?

Last edited Sat Apr 20, 2019, 07:44 AM - Edit history (1)

I've gotten several calls on my land line from my own number. On the handset screen my name and number appears as the phone rings.

I answered it with a "hello" and a voice said to press "one" to get info on how to receive a refund for overcharges.

I didn't as I've heard that certain words uttered trigger the rest of the scam to get ID info some way.

Does anyone know anything about this?

I received a spam call today from "800 Service"

I of course didn't answer the phone. After the answering machine came on, the message was in Chinese or something like that. This isn't the first time I've gotten a message like that, no idea what is going on with that. Anybody else getting messages in Chinese?

The number that called is 855-901-7422 according to caller ID

We usually let it ring out.
They can program the outgoing caller ID. These days the only benefit to caller ID is knowing that the call is from someone I actually know.

Apple ID has been compromised, and to call a particular number immediately.

of course it is a scam, that is NOT how Apple deals with hacking by calling millions of their users.

I think it is good that you point this out, becauwe it is getting worse and worse out tere

On the sixth call, I actually answered the phone and told the woman that I don't have any Apple products in my home and for them to stop calling me.

10 minutes later, another call. This time I get a man, and I let him have it. I told him that I had already reported him to the FBI, the local police department, you name it.
He got very mad, and told me that he sure hoped I had not done that, saying it in a threatening way.

I told him again that I have no Apple products in my home, and that what he was doing was a scam and that I wanted my phone number removed from their call list. And I have not heard anything from them since then.

I normally never answer any calls unless it is from someone I know. But after they kept calling, I had to do something.

It's the easiest way for them to get you to pick up your phone when you see your own name and number on the caller ID. They might place some calls to other people with your name and number as well, so there's a chance someone from a real number might call you back to find out why you called them, even though you didn't call them in the first place. Don't worry too much about it, though. The scammers won't use your number for long. If you see it again, don't pick up. Just ignore it.

99% of the time they are pissed and hang up and I never get another call from them. There was even one call center who I spammed myself. I'll call them over and over and over again until they turned their number off. It kind of makes my day but I divulge nothing. They already know enough.

Unless I know the number, I never pick up these calls. I figure if it's important whoever it is will leave a message.
