If it looks like we really will impeach Trump, he'll resign

There are a few very good tactical reasons why he'd go the Nixon route.

First...to paraphrase Samuel L. Jackson's character from "Jackie Brown," Trump ain't got a doin'-time disposition. If he resigns Pence can pardon him - and probably will pardon him the hour he's sworn in. If he's impeached, the Constitution makes that impossible.

Second, there are 207,800 reasons why Trump will not allow himself to be impeached. All of them have George Washington's portrait in the middle. $207,800 in annual pension, plus a staff and an office, are what a former president receives under the Former Presidents Act. Donald Trump is the kinda guy who wraps duct tape around his shoes glue-side-out to pick up pennies off the sidewalk. There's no damn way he's leaving $200,000 a year on the table.

Third, Trump knows Nixon ultimately became sort of an elder statesman in the years after his resignation. (That Nixon was one of the best foreign-policy experts we've ever had in the White House is why.) Trump knows he'll never be an elder statesman if he's the first man to ever be kicked out of the White House. And the sick thing is, there are people who believe Trump is the greatest president this country has ever had. If he resigns because he's "tired of the bullshit" they will still listen to him. If he's fired because he's the worst crook to have ever drawn a paycheck from the Secret Service expense account, they probably won't.

Fourth, an impeached president probably loses the right to build a monument to himself called a library. Trump really wants a library. It'll be full of exhibits on the grandeur of the Trump Administration and Trump's life before politics. Everything in it will be gold-painted, there'll be 50-foot-high portraits of The Great Man, and his display of golf paraphernalia will dwarf the collection at the World Golf Hall of Fame. All that goes away if Trump gets kicked out of office.

When the going gets tough, the tough get going and Trump gets the hell out of Dodge. There's a reason he has a plane with transoceanic range.

1. No, he will never resign. Losers resign. And he can never see himself lose.

2. Plus, he will be completely vulnerable to state charges.

With NO remedy of pardon.

He sees holding on to the presidency as his ongoing Get Out of Jail Free card. And it absolutely is.

6. And The Pressure Will Be Monumental To....

suppress votes, cheat and steal the 2020 election. He will welcome Russian help to get himself re-elected.

We need to monitor this election very closely so we can catch any dirty tricks he'll pull to get re-elected.

3. No chance.

If he resigns, he opens himself to being indicted. His primary motivation for running again for 2020 is staying out of jail.

7. I don't think so. His ego won't let him. And he won't be convicted in the Senate...

That means he'll claim total exoneration by the Senate & say that impeachment was a hoax & all part of the "failed Democrat coup."

9. Nope. He will never resign.

I could see him, after amassing billions for his re-election, decide at the last minute to pull out for health reasons, or that he just is not having that much fun anymore, and try to pull a Bill Lipinski (Dan's daddy) by anointing his kid, Ivanka. Trump really wants this to be a Trump dynasty.

10. Zero chance of that happening

he knows the Senate will never vote to remove him from office

when the effort to convict in the Senate fails, he will loudly declare victory and gloat about it

plus his narcissistic personality simply won’t allow him to resign and admit weakness or failure of any kind

11. Why?

He knows the Senate will never convict so he'd be home free.

15. I think impeach if the Dem's can figure out how to use it to their advantage

Time it so impeachment gets the most traction to win the general election for Dem's.

13. First,

he'll stay because he want the TRUMP Library to be the first Presidential library without a book.

My thinking is still carrying hope for "the big one" from the McDonalds/KFC diet.

16. Recommended.

I think he would resign because, similar to your first reason, he is a cowardly pup.

17. Does he still have the portrait that his phony foundation bought at auction?

Does he still have the portrait that his phony foundation bought at auction?

He can sell that to his library.

At a markup. Make more money.

18. Resignation is a possibility.

As he sees things, he wouldn’t be walking away in disgrace – he’d be walking out on an ungrateful nation that didn’t deserve his brilliance.

The other possibility is being convinced that he’ll lose if he runs in 2020 – THAT would be the greater defeat than simply withdrawing from a re-election bid. The convincing would have to come from people he trusts – like Ivanka or Jared. If he was told that the numbers “just aren’t there” and believed it, he’d rather not run again than face the public humiliation of being defeated.

As for the legal jeopardy he’ll be in after he leaves office, I’m sure he’s convinced himself that he can outsmart anyone who takes him on.

19. A Trump Library?

What is that? A porn magazine shop and a collection of fast food menus? There will never be a more ridiculous library in the history of the nation.

20. The same as any other presidential library, except for Trump

If I ever get elected president, I will be sure to require the place that holds the papers and artifacts from my administration be called my Presidential Museum. That's what a presidential library really is. It's not like a regular library with books in it.

21. Impeachment and conviction removes a person from office.

That is it. It does not affect their pension. It does not affect having a staff and office afterwards. It does not affect secret service protection. It does not affect a library which is privately funded anyway.
