President Trump on Thursday morning doubled down on his claims that he did not order White House counsel Don McGahn to have special counsel Robert Mueller fired, calling it “incorrectly reported by the fake news media.”

Here’s a look at the facts:

Don McGahn testified to federal investigators that he was called twice by President Trump at home and ordered to have Special Counsel Robert Mueller removed. McGahn prepared to resign rather than carry out this directive, but the president did not follow up with McGahn, and McGahn returned to work.

The Mueller report also contains information from ex-White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, who testified that McGahn told him of his plans to resign because Trump asked him to “do crazy (expletive).”

As for Trump’s claim that his order to fire Mueller was misreported by the “fake news media,” the special counsel’s report actually validated the reporting by The New York Times, which first broke the story in January 2018 that McGahn had been asked to have Mueller removed. McGahn even told White House aides as much, refusing to contact reporters to demand a correction or make a public statement denying the story’s assertions.
