(386 posts)to accurately convey how Soviet Agent Orange reached office. I'm as sick of the "Trump was elected" by American voters bullshit as I am the "Mueller proved Trump didn't conspire with Russia" bullshit. Neither of those things happened.
The American voters elected Hillary Rodham Clinton and correctly rejected Donald J. Trump.
538 individuals hand-picked for their extreme and reliable partisanship by state-level political parties, the outrageously undemocratic Electoral College, chose to put him in office.
WE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE sure as fuck didn't elect him. We very unambiguously REJECTED him.
He was ELECTORALCOLLEGED into office by a group of just 538 very partisan people assigned a temporary, specialized, frankly bizarre task.
Please describe that particular shit that happened thusly.

(37,648 posts)It won't happen again. They desperately want Trump out of office, like we do.
This is a golden opportunity. Let's make sure our candidate CAN realistically beat Trump. The debates should reveal that (I hope).
The candidates who are really in the running are:
Biden
Buttegieg
Harris
O'Rourke
Sanders
Warren
I think the others aren't gaining any traction, so aren't real contenders at this point.

(16,344 posts)I thought maybe I'd missed something along the way such as him becoming a Democrat.
Why are we even considering him at this point, especially on DU? I haven't gone on the Primaries part of DU and don't intend to, but I have read that he's listed on there as one of the candidates. Personally, I don't think he should be included on DU as a candidate. But that's just me.

(3,747 posts)Also he has caucused with the Democrats for his entire term in the Senate. Not directly identifying with them is mainly a way to apply some pressure to some aspects of the Democratic platform that he doesn't like, since he has been managing to get elected without having to align himself with the whole thing.

They actually did that, Peg, from 2008-2016. The Republican philosophy is: cut social spending, grow the debt, give corporations and billionaires bigger and bigger tax cuts, deny science, and deregulate everything. Let's drill for oil in the Grand Canyon!

(343 posts)Everybody in Washington hates him. I do believe her that there was a "fantasy" period where people thought he would realize the gravity of the job and grow into it. Nope. Trump has done absolutely nothing but be Trump. That means being a low life grifter who is lazy to boot. Of course there are sycophants that are kissing up to Trump because he is President. Once he is out of office, they won't accept his calls. I doubt he has a friend in Washington. That is why I don't think it would be that hard to impeach him. But that is for another thread.

(15,182 posts)This tweet is on a feed from Cheri Jacobus, who is another GOP strategist.
There was an interesting comment on the thread that the new Republican talking point is that Democrats should NOT impeach Trump now because that just means 'they can't win at the ballot box.'
Think about that for a minute. Quite the spin - damned if you do and damned if you don't.
I just watched Friday's Bill Maher, too, and on new rules, he had a brilliant soliloquy about Robert Mueller. And you know, he's right. Maxine Waters is right. The others calling for impeachment are right. Mueller dropped the ball on a technicality, but we cannot.
No one has a working crystal ball, but my own opinion is that if we do not add the authority of impeachment to the investigations of the Trump corruption that are currently going on, we will be perceived as spineless. Afraid. Politic instead of biting the bullet and doing what is necessary.
Trump is a cancer on this country, and we've got to educate people about how disgusting he actually is. Impeachment hearings ARE that vehicle. THEN we will win at the ballot box.
