Under Lee, JEB Stuart instructed John Brown to surrender

Not long after, when slaveholders attacked Fort Sumter, Lee and Stuart and Jackson and Booth all redefined their patriotism: the really important thing to them was simply that military power be employed in defense of slavery and against abolitionists like Brown
