James Comey Explains How Trump Has Eaten The Soul Of The Republican Party

From the article:

It starts with your sitting silent while he lies, both in public and private, making you complicit by your silence. In meetings with him, his assertions about what “everyone thinks” and what is “obviously true” wash over you, unchallenged, as they did at our private dinner on Jan. 27, 2017, because he’s the president and he rarely stops talking. As a result, Mr. Trump pulls all of those present into a silent circle of assent.
Speaking rapid-fire with no spot for others to jump into the conversation, Mr. Trump makes everyone a co-conspirator to his preferred set of facts, or delusions. I have felt it — this president building with his words a web of alternative reality and busily wrapping it around all of us in the room.
I must have agreed that he had the largest inauguration crowd in history because I didn’t challenge that. Everyone must agree that he has been treated very unfairly. The web building never stops.

It is nice of Comey to state the obvious, but Comey's own key role in attacking HRC immediately prior to election day cannot be forgotten.

And as a private citizen, Comey can do nothing to atone for what he did to throw the election.

This letter of his is far too little, far too late.

This is a decades long project. The GOP has been stirring up racial tensions since Nixon's administration. They know that they represent the interests of only the wealthiest people with their economic policies. They had to cobble together a coalition based on White Supremacy. Most people while affected by the institutional racial attitudes, are not overtly racist or White Supremacists. They reject the ideas of over racism even if they are not aware of the lasting effects of the history of the country on people of color.

The problem is that there is still a pretty sizable segment of the population that is in fact overtly racist or at least comfortable with racism. The vast majority of those people are aligned with the GOP because the GOP has signaled for the last 40+ years that they are the party that supports those views.

Trump, as you said, has thrown off the mask and is no longer dog whistling but openly signaling the support for racial bias and White Supremacy. He also advocates clearly that making money by any means, is the policy of the administration. Only Republicans who are still trying to hide the obvious facts of what the Republican Party is about, are saying the Trump is eating the soul of the party. Everyone else knows that the Republican Party sold its soul to the devil in the 1960's.

There were some decent republicans but they aren't serving today. The GOP may call themselves the party of Lincoln but merely by name only. Hell they aren't even the party of Eisenhower.

nixon planted the seed, and every republican leader from reagan and gingrich on through donald fraud, along with hate radio and foxnews and extremists like ann coulter have been spreading, uh, fertilizer... like crazy, so it should come as no surprise that it's grown into something uncontrollable.

donald fraud is merely more obvious and unsubtle than the others. but they've all been bigots, they've all been disrespectful of democrats and the rule of law, and they've all felt fully justified in winning at any cost, all while holding democrats' feet to the fire over the slightest perceived or even completely made-up transgression.

if donald fraud is feasting on the soul of the republican party, it's only because the republican party eagerly served it up on a golden platter.
