Tuxedo trousers don't usually even come with belt loops.
Nevertheless, a good-looking young man. And Sasha looks stunning.

(66,294 posts)I'm a clothes-horse. I own two of them. A traditional black one, and a gray tuxedo (Vera Wang). I usually punch them up with a white dinner jacket, a navy-and-black-checked dinner jacket, and my pride and joy: a custom-fitted black and gray brocade dinner jacket. I ordered it back in February, and by the time it was finished, the weather was too warm for an occasion to wear it.
Soon...
I also ordered a custom black tuxedo shirt to go with it. Next Fall, I'm going to rock it at the opera!....

(37,648 posts)Can you wear a bra with that? I'm not trying to criticize; it's a serious question. That really is not considered too much for a young girl? You can see the sides.
So different from my high school days, which admittedly was a long time ago.

(37,648 posts)It dates back to the ancient times and was used as a way not to recognize women as "women." They were "ladies."
Aristus
(66,294 posts)Nowadays, I think they have been divorced from any association with land, wealth, status, bloodlines, etc. I use them more in the context of character, personality, behavior, etc.
To me, a 'gentleman' is any man, regardless of socioeconomic status, who is polite, considerate, thoughtful, compassionate, selfless, and possesses a positive attitude.
The same goes for my usage of the term 'lady'. When I think of someone as a lady, I never think of her as chattel, property, or a prize to be won.
Honeycombe8
(37,648 posts)Saying, "Ladies and Gentlemen," like in introducing a speaker, is tradition and fine.
In Congress, they'll say "The GentleLady from Wisconsin," but will also say, "The Gentleman from Wisconsin." It's tradition.
Throughout history, though, and even now, it's often used while "men" is used. It is a form of referring to the women as "those others," "those females of gentle persuasion, delicate, not befitting an equal seat at the table." "Woman" implies someone stronger, an adult, and has a different connotation than "lady." Much like "man" does.
That's just my feeling on it, such as it is. But it was my explanation defending the word "girl," since she is still a minor. "Minor female" didn't seem right. I suppose "young woman" would be fine. I just chose girl, since she's still a minor. Either one is fine, though, IMO. "Young lady" is not a term I would use for anyone, any more than I would refer in ordinary conversation to David Hogg as "young gentleman." It's not my manner of speaking.

(61,690 posts)for these dress-up occasions. As Ann Landers used to say, "If you are able to hold up a strapless gown, you are old enough to wear one." There are all kinds of special bras for these gowns. I'm certain her parents are okay with the dress.
I don't much like seeing the style in wedding gowns, though, for church weddings. They make special bridal boleros for the gowns, though, so they can be removed for a dance reception.

(37,648 posts)Thank you taking my question seriously. I'm sure I sounded like an old fogie.
Very interesting...the strapless & spaghetti strap trend. I was wondering about the bra, though.
LOL....This former sort of hippie is getting old! I never thought I'd be this behind the times.
Anyway, she looks so pretty. Sigh. I can't believe she's all grown up.

(61,690 posts)Portions of the midriff bare, but top and skirt attached, and some are two pieces, with the top cropped close to the waist.
I own a gorgeous black lace over tan taffeta strapless gown I cannot wear any more, a classic, elegant, sexy design. It would look out of place today. So much for "classic."

(56,828 posts)that's fairly conservative for a prom in the 21st century
This was my daughter's prom 2 days ago:
Oh, 3 girls are seniors in the pic - one is going to Wesleyan University, one to Northeastern (biomedical engineering) and one to Kenyon College in Ohio.

(37,648 posts)The thing about the Obama dress is that there's "side boob" showing. I'm familiar with the style...I watch celebrities on awards show and such. I just didn't realize it was for the high school prom crowd.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. I was a bit on the wild side and was sent home from places a couple of times for being dressed inappropriately.

(32,596 posts)Since Sasha's parents approve of her dress, it's not up to us to criticize. These prom dresses are designed with the "bra" built into the bodice (same way swimsuits are made) so no additional undergarment needed.
I believe Michelle Obama has excellent taste in clothes, and she sets a good example for her daughters who are both tall and slender. They are lucky to have good genes, and they're both smart and beautiful girls.
