Americans need to look in the mirror
American exceptionalism is a lie. Look in the mirror. Throughout the world, people of courage rise up to fight for their rights, to fight their corrupt governments. Americans rise up to see what's on Netflix.
Look in the mirror. We obsess over every outrageous action by a celebrity, but ignore the outrageous actions of our friends, relatives, neighbors and co-workers because it is not polite to speak out against racism, hooliganism, or what goes on in another man's house (even abuse).
Look in the mirror. Americans are afraid of their own shadows. They talk a big line, express their rage on the roads, rail against the government, but are afraid to walk their neighborhoods at night.
Look in the mirror. We mock, laugh at and act like everything is a joke not seeing that we have become the laughingstock of the world.
Look in the mirror. We swear we are not racist while calling cops we know are racists to harass African Americans.
Look in the mirror. We are bloated, overweight, eating processed sugars and fat, a chemical broth that is killing us while telling ourselves we are the fittest, strongest, best.
Look in the mirror. Our schools are failing yet we continue to boast about our inflated grades.
Look in the mirror. We live in two countries. A lavish luxurious existence for the rich and unending poverty for the rest.
Look in the mirror. Our disturbed sons pick up assault rifles and kill our children. We pretend it was a hoax.
Look in the mirror. We always find reasons not to do the right thing like holding our leaders accountable for their actions. We pretend not to see what is right in front of our eyes.
Look in the mirror, America. That's YOU in the mirror. That's YOU looking back.
