Walking around with that turd..I feel bad for Prince Charles. I know Harry and William are glad they dont have to be there to greet the dictator wannabe. Also glad the Queen did not have to walk with him.

Can someone please explain this to me?

(10,301 posts)He is after all next in line and Her Majesty isn't exactly that young these days.

(16,884 posts)I meant that as a very serious question. Why is there a state meeting occurring with all the pomp and circumstance. Britain is literally in a state of emergency with the Brexit situation, their Prime Minister leaving etc and why amid all of this, would the Royals be involved in meeting with the POTUS at this time (and in light of what he has said and done).
I thought the Royals have no official governmental duty and are not Heads of State. They are supposed to not be political.
So again - why are they meeting with him?

(3,599 posts)Ugh, I hate saying that - but the royals are doing what they would do with any other head of state.
It's one of their roles. And it helps maintain relations between countries.

(9,720 posts)That's the prime minister. In the USA, the two roles are combined, which is a tragic mistake in my opinion.
The prime minister can go on with her governmental duties, unaffected by all the pomp while the Royals do what they do best. Also, as head of state, Her Majesty can delegate her official duties to whomever she chooses, in this case, other members of the Royal Family.

(9,720 posts)"entertain the president of the United States with a state visit," and the Royals comply. It is, after all, their job, and they do it better than anyone. The Queen, after all, has dealt with Idi Amin, Robert Mugabe, and George W. Bush. tRump and his merry band of trash hardly warrant a lifted eyebrow.

(740 posts)about how Princess Di wanted him. As I recalled Trump really creeped her out with unwanted attention. But then she was a very classy lady who wouldn't have given Trump the time of day

(63,221 posts)I also don't know why the entire family is tagging along on our dime. These are adult children and have no business being on this visit other than trying to score a photo op and possibly some new business in the UK. They are such disgusting grifters.

(63,221 posts)WTF? Why are they included? This is just ridiculous! I agree with with you, I would love to see what this is costing us. Apparently they are putting themselves up in one of the most expensive hotels in London.

(327 posts)As head of state The Queen has to host state visits, at the behest of the UKGov. It goes with the territory, one of the real downsides of the privileged lifestyle being royalty affords them.
I would not be surprised if she finds the prospect of another Trump encounter positively nauseating, but as a constitutional monarch she is expected to 'suck it up'. As for the other royals, protocol dictates that if HMQ has to suffer, they share the ordeal with her.
Blame our RWNJ government, which is drowning in a cesspit of their own making, for desperately wanting to suck up to Trump.

(25,586 posts)Inherited power is as ignoble as inherited wealth, and no amount of pomp and circumstance can redeem any of these people.
The fact that royalty exists in 2019 is beyond me.
Farmer-Rick
(10,140 posts)I think the royals should do more disgusting tasks what with all the stolen loot they are allowed to inherit. They need to earn that wealth instead of just getting it for coming out of a certain womb. In that respect, and free access to stolen loot, Trump and the royals have a lot in common.
Retrograde
(10,130 posts)Sure, they may have to pay some nominal income taxes now, and the Civil List has been slashed so just the Queen and her top tier relatives get money from the country in exchange for whatever it is they do, but there's still all that inherited land, art, and other holdings. For most of them the job entails showing up and looking decorative on charity boards while others do the actual work. Nice gig if you can get it.
The average bus driver/retail clerk/support center worker/etc has to put up with a whole lot more on a regular basis for a lot less. So an old lady has to make nice to a petulant manchild for a couple of days: he'll be gone soon and she can get on with her sheltered life as before.
