Cummingsto move forward with contempt votes for Barr, Ross over census question

House Oversight and Reform Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) on Friday indicated that he would formally move forward with contempt votes for Attorney General William Barr and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, after they missed a Thursday deadline to hand over documents related to his committee's investigation on the census citizenship question.

“We gave Attorney General Barr and Secretary Ross every opportunity to produce the documents the Committee needs for our investigation, but rather than cooperate, they have decided that they would rather be held in contempt of Congress," Cummings said in a statement.

"They produced none of the documents we asked for, they made no counter-offers regarding these documents, and they seem determined to continue the Trump administration’s cover-up."

1. Do the honorable thing

Hold the KGOP republican cover-up cronies in contempt not just of Congress, but also in contempt of honesty, decency, and the USA.

I hope Cummings doesn't. Hold these people accountable.

17. OK - what does "holding these people accountable"

mean specifically?

What would you want to see happen to Nadler that hasn't?

"holding Trump accountable?"

20. Whoever doesn't cooperate with documents or subpoenas be jailed.

No ifs, ands or buts and start impeachment proceedings against Trump.

21. So unless people in cuffs you don't think they are "being held accountable?"

How do you suppose they get to the point where people are charged or subpoenas?

Investigations. Dozens are going on, so you can't say that nothing is being done to hold the administration accountable.

Contempt charges have to be filed before anyone can be found guilty of it, yes? That's what Cummings is doing, yes?

How many people get jailed for not complying with congressional subpoenas? Got any examples?

In short, investigations and subpoenas are indeed holding them accountable. You are angry, and won't be happy with anything less than a perp walk, it sounds like, but that's unlikely because of the very high bar set for that.

However, Cohen and Manafort are already behind bars, for very, very specific crimes.

23. There can be a million investigations or subpoenas but

When everyone is ignoring them as in no cooperation nothing is getting done. And yes I am angry. Cohen and Manafort are in jail because evidence was found of their guilt from the raids. They didn't cooperate until then either.

24. Who is "ignoring them?" Can you clarify who "them" is?

Trying to keep track of the pronouns.

Do you have any examples of people who were jailed for ignoring congressional subpoenas?

Eric Holder was not jailed.

25. Barr and McGhan for starters are ignoring subpoenas.

I don't have examples of anyone being jailed for ignoring subpoenas. Why bother having rules of law if no one is going to follow or enforce them?

26. So do you think that it's a realistic expectation of Democrats for those two to be jailed?

It sounds as though you want to think that Democrats are "doing nothing," since you aren't seeing perp walks.

Cummings is pressing contempt charges, which is the first thing you do when a subpoena deadline is missed.

28. You seem to expect Democrats are perfectly able to get the courts to jail people

for ignoring congressional subpoenas, but that that they won't.

That's where we disagree.

now congress has to file contempt charges then we'll see where it goes.

Just like you can't start collections on a bill until the deadline for paying it has passed....

4. Exactly! Show the American people that WE do have a vicious dog in this fight.

Throw one and all of the grifters in jail.

Stop acting like we the people have no power in this struggle.

To wake up every day with a new insult, in the form of a FU from Trump and his band of grifters is disheartening.

Disheartening ESPECIALLY on June 7th. To remember the thousands of young soldiers who bravely rushed ashore to liberate Europe. By some accounts, nearly 4,500 died on the beaches.

Show the courage that they all showed in 1944.

Trump needs to be sent to prison along with the band of grifters.

6. To wake up every day...

It makes it more disheartening to find out that they got away with it, that no accountability has been done, only talk, talk, talk.

Its getting to a point that I want to stop reading, listening, because I believe it is affecting me beyond what is healthy.

9. So they move forward with something concrete and it's "disheartening"

If they don't do something, then they are just 'talking.'

Either way, you complain.

that Dems in Congress are walking the talk.

7. In this era of upside-down politics, I fear....

many Republicans will consider a contempt citation from our Congress as a badge of honor....

Further, all will be later rewarded with cushy jobs with a right-wing think tank, media outlet, legal firm or industrial corporation.

16. I'm glad he's doing it, but in the end it will amount to nothing considering who is in charge

of the federal authorities who would do anything to implement it. He can take it to court, but the last time that happened the case lasted 4 years. I think complaints should be made to the state agencies where any professional licenses are held by any of the people who ignore subpoenas. There should at least be a hearing by those state agencies about a licensed person defying a Congressional subpoena. I don't see how an attorney can continue to be licensed after doing such a thing.
