Spirit Airlines passenger banned for life after allegedly vaping on flight

A 30-year-old Spirit Airlines passenger on a flight from Detroit to New Orleans recently got himself banned for life after deciding to take a smoke break in the plane's bathroom.

An attendant on Flight NK 985 told a deputy on Tuesday that she saw him take a drag from an e-cigarette and exhale into a bag, said Jefferson Parish Sheriff's spokesman Capt. Jason Rivarde. She admonished him.

The St. Petersburg, Florida, resident then got up and headed for the restroom, according to a report filed with the sheriff's office. While he was in the bathroom, the plane's smoke alarm went off.

I was not caught/admonished first doing it in the cabin, however.

I was ordered first off the plane when we landed, and 3 City cops were waiting in the jetway when I got to my destination.

I just didn't think the 'smoke detector' would detect vapor, like an idiot.

I was also extremely cool and cooperative with the cops, and plead both 'being an idiot' and 'having a serious nicotine addiction' ... the latter of which is true ...

Fortunately I was also born in their city, big fan of the local sports teams (had some local team gear on), had lots of stories about my connection to their city as they were writing up my ticket, subtly tried to make it sound like I was wealthy, etc ... You know, the proper way to handle interactions with Police.

Of course, I am white, and they were white ... might've helped.

I got off scott-free, with no ticket (even though the cop filled one out, in the end, he declined to give it to me, on account of my being cooperative and apologetic, I KID YOU NOT!), with no fine/ban from the airlines.

My guess is that this dude was probably, on top of it ... an asshole about the whole thing.

That, or I'm just incredibly lucky and/or charming

my entire life has been plagued by smokers who triggered debilitating migraines. Obviously, it has gotten better in the past decade or two with regulation and laws and vaping likely is not as big an issue. But, whether people become a'holes to get their fix or they were just a'holes to begin with, the two do seem to frequently go together.

I will never forget a trip to Richmond, VA from Dulles when I was a teen and had just returned from overseas with my sister. The flight had been turbulent and long and delayed and I was already halfway nauseous. The only shuttles then were car services, which were shared. Despite my (and my sister's) polite but desperate pleas for a fellow passenger not to smoke his cigar, he refused and I vomited repeatedly the entire way, then ended up in the ER with a triggered migraine.

So, yeah, I know of what I speak.

3. Vaping was not only issue. Another passenger complained about his drinking from booze he had.
