Democrats buzz about AOC primarying Chuck Schumer

Mike Allen 2 hours ago

Top Democrats tell "Axios on HBO" they expect Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may eventually primary one of the two New York senators — Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer in 2022, or Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in 2024.

Why it matters: AOC has instantly become one of the party's most coveted endorsers (up there with Clintons and Obamas) — and has recently made common cause with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a pairing that could take off.

A Harris poll for "Axios on HBO" shows socialism is soaring in popularity, especially with women ages 18 to 54 (55%) and younger Americans.

Corbin Trent, Ocasio-Cortez's communications director, said that when she thinks down the road, she thinks in terms of transitioning Democrats to a party that's unified around progressive policies.

The title is misleading. It states in the article that even her communications director is dubious. dameatball Jun 2019 #11

Still, there is a reason why if you get ahead of your skis--you get TRIPPED UP.

Gillibrand is just filling space anyway, as far as I'm concerned. Schumer would be a risky move. Either she scores a big upset and gets on all the talk shows on Sunday morning, or she goes down in flames. Given her relatively recent prominence and her savvy use of it, I would ask her if the name Icarus means anything to her, and if not, to check it out.

and picking a Democratic team, my first pick is AOC. "Top Democrats tell Axios" that AOC will run for Senate means nothing to me. All I know is that I want her on my team, she has the rare ability to control the narrative, not many politicians have that ability.

It would alienate a lot of Dems in New York State and AOC is too smart to do that. She's young and can afford to wait for Schumer or Gillibrand to retire. Or maybe she'll run for Governor after Cuomo steps down.

AOC is learning fast about PR, but planting stories like this isn't going to cut it outside of NYC. And not even in all of NYC.

Further, the article states contradictory numbers for OAC statewide. In other words, seems like nothing like what the headline reads will happen prior to 2020.
