Two more horses die at Santa Anita as track resists recommendation to suspend racing

Hours after Santa Anita Park officials declined Sunday to accept a state agency’s recommendation that the track suspend the rest of its meet, another horse died at the storied Southern California venue.

Truffalino, a 3-year-old filly who reportedly collapsed of an apparent heart attack during a race Sunday, became the 29th horse to die since Santa Anita began its winter-spring meet in late December.

Following the death Saturday of Formal Dude, a 4-year-old gelding who reportedly suffered a fractured pelvis during a race and was subsequently euthanized, the California Horse Racing Board attempted to intervene. The CHRB said it recommended that Santa Anita halt racing but “allow horses to continue to train” at the track until the scheduled end of its spring/summer meet June 23, a span in which it is set to hold six more race days.

“This would provide the industry more time to fully implement announced safety initiatives and perhaps additional ones,” the agency said in a statement (via KSWB).

1. Way too young a horse to be racing. She should have been out running in a field. The tax shelters

for race horse owners must be done away with or horses will keep dying or continue to be sent to slaughter when they can't win. Good and kind people and sanctuaries cannot $$$$ continue to support the horses race horse owners discard when the horse becomes a piece of toilet paper under their shoe.

5. Since many races are for 2 years olds, the horses are started under saddle at 18 months

WAY, way, way, too young to be experiencing the stresses of a rider and running at speed on demand!

Horse's bone ends do not finish fusing until four or five years old and they do not reach peak muscle development until they are five or six.

2. Shut this cruel excuse for a sport down.

Entertainment predicated on an activity that has the potential to kill an animal is vile and sickening.

3. Horse Racing is not humane

It's akin to dog fighting. These animals are abused before they're even born right up to the moment of their deaths.

Message for the humans on this planet, ANIMALS ARE NOT YOUR PLAY THINGS!!! They aren't here to torment and abuse so you can get a thrill by watching them perform for you.

4. 3-year-old filly...became the 29th horse to die

29 horses.

and they refuse to shut it down.

They track vets deny it's caused by any of the many medications that they give the horses. I dunno

6. I'd be curious to see what an audit of the medication they give the horses would bring up.

This is some serious shit and shall not stand, and all the owners care about is making a profit. They can't make a profit when their product is dying.
