Labour MPs tore into Jeremy Corbyns Brexit strategy at a party meeting on Monday night, with several MPs loyal to the leadership saying they felt ashamed to vote for the party at the European elections and urging a change of direction.
Marie Rimmer...whose speech inspired whoops and cheers in the room, told Corbyn: People who worked with you for years are turning away from us. In what colleagues described as an emotionally charged speech, Rimmer said that it wasnt easy for me to vote Labour in the EU elections, and the leadership is not there on the partys Brexit policy. She eviscerated him, one Labour MP said. No one was expecting her to speak out like that. Another called it one of the best speeches I have ever heard in here it clearly came from the heart.
MPs also expressed alarm that Corbyns opening speech failed to mention the investigation into antisemitism in the party that has been launched by the Equality and Human Rights Commission. The partys handling of antisemitism cases was compared with the automatic expulsion of the former spin doctor Alastair Campbell for admitting he had voted Lib Dem in the European elections. Labour MP Wes Streeting suggested this was a double standard.

(10,143 posts)parties work. So let me ask, Is Jeremy Corbyn in danger of losing his position as head of the Labour Party? Given his track record I can't understand how he hangs on. Is Labour even wackier than I had imagined?

(9,287 posts)As an observer only and given his history on several subjects, I really dont see his appeal. He voted to leave yet he is head of a party that favors remain. Labours Brexit position is a disaster and Corbyn is the architect of that position (or lack of position).

(101,306 posts)He's always been unpopular with a lot of Labour MPs, but the party members and affiliates, who have the main say in the voting system, preferred him significantly to the last challenger (and to the other options in his original election). While he's falling out of favour with the typical Labour voter, I think the party activists would still keep him in power if anyone tried to run against him.

(56,582 posts)Which is a damned shame, because Labour should be taking every single vote the Lib Dems got.
In principle, a leadership challenge can happen at any time. Realistically, there's nobody who's willing to take the first swipe at him.
