The American Republican party, formerly also called "conservative" is throwing every piece of evil shit at us. Kids in cages; state-ordered pelvic exams; climate CRISIS denial and other wilfull ignorance of science; lies and corruption through and through.
I am not confident where this ends. They say democracies fall very fast, when they fall. UC Berkley prof Terri Kanefield on twitter tells us to look to Chile to see how they got their democracy back after a military takeover.

I'm tired. Old and tired. I want to be in the streets, but I can't go alone. My time is up. I will grieve every day of what is left of my life for what has been done to those who come after - human, animal, nature. It's not going to be pretty.

(5,403 posts)trump has no intention of paying social security or medicare. even if he does not treat us to the Pinochet style helicopter rides, I don't think I can live very long without decent nutrition and medication.

(13,360 posts)It's not looking good and I have ore and more conversations with my kids (teens) about what we might do in case of the SHTF...
Either way, no matter what happens with trump, this planet is in decline and it's gonna be narly within our lifetime.

(24,726 posts)more and more kids are becoming depressed and even suicidal. Teen depression is increasing.
Everywhere humans go on this planet, decimation follows.
I just hope shreds of nature out-survive us.

(7,142 posts)40 years ago I got elected to borough council because I led the fight against stripping coal and fracking for gas on our pristine watershed. We succeeded, not stopped, in limiting the possible damage. We have a Representative, Glenn Thompson who breathes methane and drinks oil. Cheney really fucked our country when he exempted the oil and gas frackers from complying with not just the Clean Air and water Act but exempted them from dozens of other regulatory acts. WE in Pa. have at least 11 sewage treatment plants that accept frack water. We even allow frack water to be spread on our highways to treat for snow and ice. My daughter lives outside of Pittsburgh and she will never drink her tap water.I now hear that the EPA is looking into allowing frack water to be dumped into rivers. WTF. The shit is full of heavy metals, becomes radioactive that is never tested for, is mainly similar to anti-freeze.
Can humans adapt to drink radioactive anti-freeze?

(13,360 posts)Living in a national Forest and rural area, I am always awed at the resilience of nature. The planet will be much better off without the likes of us
Ya, my kids have no aspirations to have children, or plan their lives for any sort of long term...aside from a plan for the coming apocalypse...

Where roughly are you? Our property borders national forest. Lovely, but comes with its own set of stark indicators.

(13,360 posts)Yes, I have been here 27 years and seen it change drastically. This winter was one for the record books and not in a good way...yes, it fixed the drought, but it's swinging drastically from extreme heat and fires in the summers and extreme cold and wet in the winters... more so than usual.
we're literally *just* getting spring here this week!

(5,733 posts)all that is stated happens, Trump becomes an autocrat, and then - Trump drops dead.
That's when the real problem with social and government instability sets in, when the power grabs start.

(43 posts)What we're dealing with here are a group of people (Republicans) who've abandoned themselves entirely to their base animal instincts, versus us (Democrats) who are trying our best to resist said impulses. Who will win? I've no idea. But it won't be Angels or Demons, in any case! Homo sapiens shall determine our own fate, in this country and all others.

I recommend getting the slim book by Yale holocaust historian Timothy Snyder: "On Tyranny: Twenty Lessons From The Twentieth Century".
Just $7.95. Essential reading for this moment. He tells us what to look for and how to be.
Two things that ANYONE can do right now. Join the ACLU for the price of a couple of coffee drinks and lend your voice to the cause of liberty. And defend our free watchdog press as reporters stand between the people and tyranny every freaking day as they cover this presidency.
Your voice is important. We can be in the "streets" via keyboard advocacy for causes we value.
Hold on.
