A Phoenix couple is suing the city after police officers reportedly arrested and pulled a gun on them after their 4-year-old daughter took a doll from a store.
The lawsuit, which seeks $10 million, alleges that the officers committed battery, unlawful imprisonment, false arrest and other civil rights violations, a local NBC affiliate reported.
After leaving a Family Dollar store with their two daughters, Dravon Ames and Iesha Harper realized one of the girls had taken a doll with her out of the store, NBC reported, citing a notice of the incoming lawsuit filed this week.
The couple then drove their daughters to a nearby apartment complex to meet their babysitter. When they got there, Phoenix police confronted them in the parking lot.
A video taken by a bystander was posted on Facebook by the citys police department. In the video, an officer appears to push a handcuffed man against a car, kicking him in the legs.

Who am I kidding, it wasn't a $5,000 doll.
It's fucking FAMILY DOLLAR, the Wal*Mart of dollar stores.

(8,852 posts)...a store employee must have seen the girl take the doll and instead of approaching the parents they allowed them to leave and then called the police on them. They must have given the police a description of the car and the plate numbers. How else could the cops have tracked them down?
Someone wanted the cops to ambush these people over this fucking doll.

(8,690 posts)Supposedly some unnamed person reported them
skypilot
(8,852 posts)If we go with that scenario, it was someone who decided to call the police rather than inform an employee of the store that a CHILD had walked out with a cheap little doll.
Either way, it appears that someone wanted this family to be confronted by the police over a fairly trivial occurrence.
And confronted they were.

What am I missing in story?

(1,827 posts)I would have immediately taken it back. Not go run other errands. Story sounds fishy. I could be wrong though

(33,643 posts)that the 'story sounds fishy'.
You'd think they were Bonnie and Clyde just returning from a heavily armed Bank Heist ... the way these dirtbag pigs acted.
Story says the were taking kids to babysitter ... maybe someone immediately needed to get to work?

(1,827 posts)For someone else's opinion. I didn't say the excessive force was justified, I just said that, given my mindset, I would have immediately returned to the store and explained what happened. It's not just black and white ( not racially meaning ).
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Yes I am friggin' testy about it. I also live in the area. Not directed at you my friend, sorry if it came off that way.
I have no doubt that had they returned to the store this same scene would've played out either on the side of the road on their way back, or IN the parking lot at the store.
These prick cops were completely out of their MINDS.

(8,690 posts)A person not connected to the store did. So we do not know what this person said.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)And their car was an old beater with no GPS, I'd guess the cops got the call and were so close to the store that they were able to follow the couple to the babysitters based on the vehicle description from the caller. Otherwise how would they have been found so fast?
So I'm guessing even if they'd turned around and drove back to the store halfway to the babysitters, they'd have been confronted by these out of control madmen.

(1,827 posts)I accidently did a drive off from a gas station. Was back there within five mins to pay for the gas.

(33,643 posts)AZ Valley cops are pretty friggin out of control.
It's not JUST PoC (usually but not always) ... it's more ANYONE they don't like the looks of for whatever reason, and they FLIP at the slightest hesitation to do EXACTLY what they COMMAND YOU to do.
If you're white, look well-off, and royally kiss their ass ... then they're nice as can be.

(8,690 posts)and that you have never had a kid who stuck something from a store in his pocket.
skypilot
(8,852 posts)...to the babysitter's place than to the store by the time they realized their daughter had taken the doll. They might have intended to return the doll after dropping off the children. But if an employee saw the child take the doll then this whole thing should have played out a lot different from the outset.

(8,690 posts)You get in your car and the kid pulls something out of his pocket - usually candy. You have lots to do, esp. a pregnant mom with two toddlers. Who the f returns to the store for a doll that is probably worth 25cents.

(1,827 posts)It's about mindset
skypilot
(8,852 posts)In this situation I would be more concerned about the mindset of a cop who would handle things this way.

(8,231 posts)un-professionalism was astounding. Obviously just from hearing that you know it's not going to get better.
We need to stop hiring just any old asshole who can pass a test to be a cop.
mr_lebowski
(33,643 posts)Honestly think that if she didn't have a toddler in her arms that cop would've gunned her down as she sat in the car.
