Iran may have had something to do with attacking oil carriers.
LGBTQs may have had something to do with climate change.
Elves may be plotting to kill Santa.
C'mon, let's face it. The chances of Iran having anything to do with those attacks on oil carriers is virtually nil. And the reason I say this is because of the timing. Trump is drowning and he is badly in need of a distraction. And what better distraction than war.
The people running Iran aren't as crazy as the orange freak running America. There's no way they would give him an excuse at this moment to distract us from the vortex of shit that Trump has made for himself and in which he is drowning.
We can't let America get conned into another war. Somehow, someway, we must stop this insanity.
Right now, he's the (unhinged) "Commander-in-chief" and can order the military to do whatever he wants them to do. What if he ordered them to attack California? Would they do it? Well how about if he ordered them to attack Iran? Would they do it? After all, they know, better than most, the consequences.
Does anyone doubt that Iran has nuclear capabilities? Does anyone doubt they'd use them if attacked? Please wake up, people. Trump and the maniacs around him could start WWIII. And if he does, there will never, ever be a WWIV.

I agree with you that Iran likely had little if anything to do with these attacks.
But, just for fun, let's assume for a moment that was 100% Iran.
2 non-US ships get damaged in a rough part of the world (for a lot of reasons) and nobody is hurt or killed. For that we're going to send more young Americans to the Middle East to die in the sand?
Of all his faults/crimes (of which there are many), that he can and will do this is, to me, at the top of the immorality list. And make no mistake, if he thinks for a minute that this will save bit bone-spurred ass...he'll be on it in a New York minute. And not one republican will stand against it.
Sorry, it's just one of those days when I think he can't go any lower - and he proves me wrong.
