U.S. Postal Service more proof the government more efficient than the private sector

Republicans and neoliberals force feed Americans too many fallacies. The problem is these pseudo-realities are detrimental to our pocketbooks, health, and more. The U.S. Postal Service comes to mind anytime discussing efficiency as it is the clear example of a myth that can be dispelled thoroughly with probative examples.

I agree with most of the things said here. I do admit however, competition is a good thing. The USPS has adapted and evolved and has not been given enough credit. I only wonder if it is enough to keep up with the demands of this ever changing world.

They have been maliciously downsized, purposely stripped of experienced unionized employees, crippled by forced prepayment of pension benefits for employees that haven't even been hired yet, closure of distribution centers, the list goes on.

Its a blessed miracle it can function at all frankly. The fact that it is is testament to its efficiency.

In schools, the same company, Pearson, writes the lousy tests that the public schools "fail." and then they point to that as an excuse for "charter schools" which are just schools where they can break all the rules, provide minimal education, and deposit tax dollars into their own pockets. Pearson owns the test prep, and the textbooks, and the remedial programs. They've already got education by the small hairs.

Certainly mistakes are made, but considering the task and the volume of mail they handle those are insignificant. We should support and expand this service.

dismantling a magnificent system created by Benjamin Franklin, that will deliver a birthday card to someone who can only be reached by horseback, plane or boat (and now drones) for less than the cost of a candy bar, shows how badly they've been corrupted by what replaced traditional conservatism in their party.

Btw, this does not illustrate that government must be more efficient than industry, only that the advantages of our magnificent USPS can't be outcompeted.

What is conservatism? Is it not adherence to the old and tried, against the new and untried? -- Lincoln

At least 6 times in the last couple years, I have had packages mis directed all over the country. The final distribution center for my area is in Detroit and once it leaves there I should receive it the next day.

Somehow it makes it to Detroit as planned, but then instead of going to my local post office, it goes on a road trip to other states. One time I mailed a package to northern Indiana. Goes to Detroit first, but then shows in transit for 4 days ending up in San Francisco. Another three days in transit to go to Oakland, Ca. Finally ends up on Indianapolis and eventually gets delivered 10 days after mailing.

Had it happen several times; the first time I said stuff happens, but after the third or fourth time, I just dont get it.
