(11,728 posts)but I think "They were traitors" would have been better. Of course they were racists. I would bet the majority of the soldiers fighting on the Union side were also racists. The difference is that in the South, they actually did not see Black people as human beings and thus maintained chattel slavery to the point of treason against the rest of the country.

(1,736 posts)Condoning rebellion against the federal government in the name of racial hatred... it's a shame that Confederate public nostalgia has endured as long as it has.

(11,728 posts)Remember that "confederate" public nostalgia is White Supremacy public nostalgia. Unfortunately it is quite common.

(7,808 posts)I decided to find it on Google Maps (27th Avenue). But, guess what? The best you can see is one small corner of it. There is either a tree trunk or a leafy bush or tree in the way, or it's too far to tell what it is. They must have done that on purpose.

(22,976 posts)The monument was dedicated to Confederate soldiers in 1909, specifically to the Frank Cheatham Bivouac No. 1, camp 35. Note below how the news article lifts a sentence directly from Wikipedia, but casually erases the slavery aspect of this "Southern gentleman's" biography: "elite of the slave society" is downgraded to "aristocracy."
From the linked WSLS article, regarding Benjamin Franklin Cheatham:
...He was born in Nashville into two of the most prominent families of the middle Tennessee aristocracy...
From Wikipedia, pertinent sentence bolded:
Benjamin Franklin Cheatham was born in Nashville, Tennessee on a plantation called Westover, which in its prime consisted of three thousand acres. He was born into two of the most prominent families of the middle Tennessee elite of the slave society. His mother was descended from General James Robertson, the founder of Nashville and "father" of Middle Tennessee, who came from Virginia. The Cheathams had been in middle Tennessee for two generations and become established as plantation owners, lawyers, doctors and mayors of the city.

(17,984 posts)Not really a big deal, though I'm sure the contemporary racists will have a conniption fit and call it "uncivil."

(6,699 posts)We are just concluding a 4 day drive through Texas, and I've counted a half dozen confederate flags flying in yards along the highways. Makes me want to vandalize them, but these same yokels are probably sitting by their windows with a lock and loaded AR 15, just waiting to shoot some damned Yankee.
Plenty of red neck goat ropers...but also so of the sweetest people in the country.
