(525 posts)They are saying shes not bringing any new news to the table and divided progressives in the process. Not very smart.
So...
What is she going to do about it?
Wheres her legislation to stop it?

I still believe AOC meant to reference the holocaust, to many Jews an offensive comparison.
Nonetheless, I would like to see her propose active interventions, document conditions in detention
centers, lobby for greater media coverage and follow up, insist on discovering the fate of the lost children, present authoritative information about the consequences on emotional health and child development of family separation...etc. etc.
Primo Levi committed suicide. His memoir of his experience in Auschwitz, if This is a Man, is a harrowing account. Although he stressed perseverance and survival in his writings, Ellie Wiesel, also an Auschwitz survivor, said that Levi died in Auschwitz, 40 years later.
Although our government is not carrying out a genocidal plan against Central American asylum seekers and refugees, many will be traumatized for life; some deported back to violence, extortion,
grueling poverty could die. There has been at least one known murder of a deportee in Mexico due to a mistaken gang hit and of a two transgender women, one while in custody and the other shortly after release.

Work with Dems who are already experienced and familiar with the process.

(60,010 posts)According to Article 2 of the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide defines genocide as "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
1.killing members of the group;
2. causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; ( as you mentioned)
3.deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life, calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
4.imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
5.forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
Border Patrol argued in court the other day that they should not have to provide soap, toothpaste/brushes, and beds to the children, who have been sleeping on cold cement floors with an aluminum wrap for blankets.
See my recent post OFFICE OF INSPECTOR GENERAL DHS report on the concentration camps:
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100212202181
which describes the inhumane crowding of inmates, such that people are standing on the toilet seats in each overcrowded cell just to get a better breath of air.
A cell with a maximum capacity of 12 held 76 detainees
a cell with a maximum capacity of 8 held 41 detainees
a cell with a maximum capacity of 35 held 155 detainees
Border Patrol agents told us some of the detainees had been held in standing-room-only conditions for days or weeks.
People are forced to stand for days, wearing the same clothes as when they were captured, in severe crowded conditions. Now there are reports of communicable diseases spreading.

(8,709 posts)in my memory to grill a bank, back in March during the House Financial Services Committee's pattern of consumer abuses, chief executive Tim Sloan of Wells Fargo, Why was the bank involved in the caging of children and financing the caging of children to begin with?
"The exchange highlighted the divisiveness over the family separation policy, but also the dispute over the language used to describe the detention facilities. Government officials have previously requested the media not refer to them as 'cages.' As recently as last week, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen got into a semantic back-and-forth with members of Congress about what constitutes a cage."

(8,685 posts)Really? Because they are creating a very purposeful plan to dehumanize and attack them, especially children.
We are holding CHILDREN in camps under indefinite detention and subjecting them to solitary confinement and other punitive methods. DHS has stated that due to "budget issues" they will be denying them recreational activities, school and access to legal aid.
The DOJ is actively in court, right now, to challenge the need of CHILDREN in their custody have a warm place to sleep, toothbrushes or even soap.

People tend to think of history in broad strokes, the executive summary, of what happened.
People forget the years long effort at blaming of Jews and other "undesirables" for the issues in Germany, the attacks and dehumanization media campaign by the then rising nazi party, the ghettos, arrests and beatings with no charges. These things occered over years.
No one, including AOC, is implying that the US govt currently plans to put children into camps and then murder illegal immigrants.
That actually wasn't the plan in the beginning in Germany either. The actual plan for that was called "the final solution" for a reason. It was to stop pretending they had any other interests than the murder of 'undesirables" in German society.
It can happen. It has happened. It can happen again.

(10,144 posts)"Fascists don't tell their followers who to kill, they tell them who to hate, and let human nature take its course."
Trump has been fomenting hatred of these immigrants (and others) for years. It's no surprise conditions in these concentration camps (I use the term advisedly) are so terrible, and mistreatment of immigrants is seen as justified by Trump's supporters.
A significant number of Trump's more violent followers, if given the green light, would readily begin exterminating immigrants. The only thing holding them back is we are still a somewhat civilized country, but that could easily change given the right circumstances.

is seared into my brain.
When I read about the migrant children who have been separated from their parents at the border, I think of the pile of shoes near the end of the museum. So many shoes.
My heart aches. The museum should be required viewing for every American.
I am in tears now in anger at this administration and its concentration camps. And thats what they are. Concentration camps. AOC and George Takei are right in calling the childrens camps what they are.
