Santorum and Opus Dei

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3284419

Searching on Google about Santorum and whether or not he was a member of this group, I found this old DU blog on the matter. Here's an excerpt on one of the posts. Damned scary..

American VIPs included Archbishop John Myers of Newark, N.J., a member of Opus Dei’s Priestly Society of the Holy Cross, and U.S. Senator Rick Santorum, Republican of Pennsylvania. Santorum told NCR he is not a member of Opus Dei, but an admirer of Escriva.
……

He told NCR that a distinction between private religious conviction and public responsibility, enshrined in John Kennedy’s famous speech in 1960 saying he would not take orders from the Catholic church if elected president, has caused “much harm in America.”

“All of us have heard people say, ‘I privately am against abortion, homosexual marriage, stem cell research, cloning. But who am I to decide that it’s not right for somebody else?’ It sounds good,” Santourm said. “But it is the corruption of freedom of conscience.”

Santorum told NCR that he regards George W. Bush as “the first Catholic president of the United States.”

“From economic issues focusing on the poor and social justice, to issues of human life, George Bush is there,” he said. “He has every right to say, ‘I’m where you are if you’re a believing Catholic.’ ”

I thought Kennedy was the only Catholic president, i'm not Catholic but i don't regard killing 100000 iraqi civilians and *cough*being involved in human & drug trafficking*cough* very catholic virtues...anyways,

C. John McCloskey, a Opus Dei priest, was responsible for the conversion of Newt Gingrich, McCloskey also seems to have ties with Santorum

I knew Newt has close ties to that group for quite a while now but to my surprise i only found out that Santorum is a Roman Catholic very recently, probably because i never even bothered researching him because he didn't seem like a candidate with much support

but looking very quickly i found this,

In fact, he attends St. Catherine of Siena Church in Falls Church, Virginia, St. Catherine's has a strong Opus Dei presence, complete with Sunday morning Latin Mass. It is the Washington, DC parish for many Opus Dei members and cooperators, such as former Senator Rick Santorum. Becoming "incorporated" as a "member" is a long and difficult process that may be impossible for either e federal judge or Supreme Court justice to complete. Furthermore, his aforementioned son Paul has been reported, to be a priest in the Order of the Holy Cross Opus Dei's priestly order as well as being affiliated with Fr. Frank Pavone's Priests for Life.
