Once was a time I lived in Elizabeth, NJ about a block from the old Burry's Cookie Factory, and walking distance from Newark's Ironbound.
The entire area was South American, and my neighborhood was Brazilian. My favorite restaurant had the menu in three languages-- Portugues, Spanish, and English. Good thing, too, because hardly anyone there spoke English and you ordered by pointing. You really felt you were traveling when in there. Little deli across the street had some incredible imported stuff, too.
Other neighborhoods were from different countries, but the food was always good, and there was always a festival happening. Music, dancing, and laughter-- just like in the old movies.
Newark's Ironbound was named because it was bordered by railroad tracks. It was a stopping point for generations of immigrants; Italians, Irish, Eastern European... many stopped in the Ironbound before moving on to final settlements. Now it's South Americans.
I doubt it's changed much, and ICE would make whatever quotas they have in no time at all. But the very fabric of the cities would be destroyed. And all for no reason.
