I had an online subscription for a period of time, till I ran into too many articles by questionable writers (e.g., writers who are dismissive of the Russia investigation). So I purposely didn't renew it.
Months after I failed to renew it, I got a dunning email, telling me I was late on renewing -- and FALSELY saying they had been sending me paper copies, and it was time for me to pay for them.
I think they're trying to dupe people who no longer want any subscription to keep paying for one.

The only way I can see to avert this is to "cancel" your subscription soon after you subscribe. This doesn't cancel in the traditional sense; it just lets your subscription run, but prevents automatic renewal.
