(8,144 posts)party and less hostility if we are not to repeat the mistakes we made in 2016, which is not to say that factors beyond our control did not play a role.
I believe whichever place you occupy on the ideological spectrum, this piece is worth a read.
I urge its author to copy and paste as a topic for discussion.

(11,726 posts)I agree that moderate Democrats are not and should not be considered enemies of the left. There are a lot of things that they hold in common and they have a common enemy. HOWEVER, while more radical elements of the far left view moderates with suspicion, there is some validity to the concern.
The arguments stem from how moderate Democrats/liberals take on (or more accurately often fail to take on) the right. A lot of leftists believe that liberalism fails to effectively understand and deal with right wing ideologies, especially the more extreme right wingers. Moderate liberals have been accused of being more apt to defend right wingers who are counter attacked by say Antifa than they are to support Antifa itself. Liberals have been accused of "wanting to debate" extremist right wingers instead of de-platforming them.
Here is one take on the the conflict. It is a 4 part series that I thought was interesting. I did not agree with all the points, but it does highlight some vulnerabilities in liberalism.

(5,648 posts). . . are better at taking on the far right because, though they believe in totally different ideologies, those two opposite sides are very much alike in the way they behave?

(11,726 posts)I do not believe that people on the far left are like those on the right in the way they behave.
Did you watch the series?

.... ...the dislike of moderate Democrats candidates and their supporters by some of those on the far left is almost palatable.
Sometimes it seems like in their minds, those like myself who are more moderately progressive are considered to members of the enemy camp along with the worst conservatives. Their favorite derogatory term for us seems to be corporate democrats though given my personal belief system they couldnt be more off base. The apparently also hate compromises because they call any solution to a problem which could possibly pass through Congress during the best of times as totally inadequate baby steps. ....
If you are one of those people please be advised, we moderate Democrats are not your enemies. We are friends; we are your best potential allies. In fact we are the only allies you have and without us your agenda will go absolutely nowhere. There is a simple reason for this. You make up only a small portion of this nations voting population, and just as importantly, there are more us (moderate Democrats) than there are of you. You may be louder, and you may be more passionate, and you may contribute more money to your candidates than we do, but you dont out number us. Regardless of how passionate you are, you have only one vote apiece and we all vote as well.
Everyone needs to understand that the Democrats took control of the House of Representatives in the 2018 elections only because many moderate Democrats beat Republicans, often incumbent Republicans, in purple districts. There are now as many moderate Democrats in Congress as progressives. Those moderate Democrats have to get themselves reelected in 2020 if we are to maintain control of the House and they are not going to get reelected by advocating the big bold progressive plans like Medicare for All or the Green New Deal in their purple districts. Odds are against Democrats assuming control of the Senate in 2020, but if we do it certainly wont be because our Senate candidates advocated for such proposals in their purple and red states. ....
And one last thing and this is advice for the supporters of all Democratic candidates: I know that many of you want to support your favorite candidates for the nomination in any way possible. However, do yourself and your favorite candidate a favor dont try to do so by posting negative comments about other Democratic candidates on social media. Chances are you are not going to change anyones mind, but I can almost guarantee that you are going to royally tick of the supporters of the candidates you attack. Not only will those supporters be far less likely to come around to supporting your candidate should theirs fall by the wayside during the nomination process, they are also be far less likely to enthusiastically support your candidate should he/she win the nomination. ....

(24,461 posts)All I got to say is 2010-2016. That wasn't because of "leftists".
Clinton/Gore centrism doesn't win elections in the 21st century.
Take a hard look at what creates a disenfranchised voter. I guarantee it's because they see two parties, both similar economically and only separated by who sucks less on societal issues, not caring about what's really ailing them.
There really is NO GOOD REASON to vote for a Republican politician in the 21st century. But we really need to do more and pragmatic incremental center-right rhetoric is NOT the answer. I don't know whether "doing more" means "putting a lid on Capitalist Greed before it kills us all" or what, but more needs to be done.

(24,461 posts). . . but I cannot take anyone seriously that wants to continue the "bake sale-to-bankruptcy" system of Mercantile CullCare we have now. Status Quo just is not going to cut it in the wealthiest nation on Earth any more. Families are getting SLAUGHTERED with medical bills. I don't want to hear that "we can't do multi-payer, the money just isn't there"; crying poor when you just gave the wealthy 2 trillion dollars. COME on.
