I ask again, what does the Democratic Party stand for?
http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/08/28/dolan-to-offer-prayer-at-democratic-convention/
Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York has accepted an invitation to deliver the closing prayer at the Democratic National Convention next week, following through on a promise he made when accepting the same role at the Republican convention.
His appearance before the Democrats in Charlotte, N.C., which was announced on Tuesday by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York, may lead to one of the most intriguing tableaus of this convention season. Cardinal Dolan, an opponent of abortion and same-sex marriage who is among the Catholic bishops suing the Obama administration over its contraception health care mandate, will bless a gathering of thousands of delegates who passionately disagree with him. Please tell me we don't stand for slapping women and GLBT citizens in the face with a $2 million Cathedral building's cornerstone?

1. Perhaps that is the problem with the Democratic party, they are an "inclusive" party, which presents
an interesting paradox.
Howard Dean said we should reach out to people we don't agree with, not in so many words, but that was his 50 state strategy. The Democratic party has changed drastically throughout the years. I would like to think todays Democratic party stands for at least certain basic principles which include: 1. The right to privacy 2. Preserving Social Security and Medicare 3. Civil Rights However, you can find Democrats, many blue dogs, who do not adhere to even the above. Thus we are a divided party. |

2. Irony?
Who knows anymore?
Gay bashers at inaguration and convention but marriage equality is plank in platform. Convention held in scab state but pay lip service to labor. They talk about justice and reform but won't touch a single Wall Street criminal. Talk about the American worker as they work out yet another job killing trade agreement. It's easy to point at the bagger party and say "do you want to vote for those crazy bastards?" as we become more and more like what they once were. I want the pre-DLC Democratic Party back. Not going to get it. |

5. DLC DLC DLC bla bla bla... The DLC no longer exists. That meme is dead and buried. You want purity,
and thank god we instead have some reality and a larger tent than the the RePUKES. We don't need to be The Purist Democratic Version Of The TeaParty.

6. Stick your head in the sand all you want.
It doesn't change the fact that this is a corporate suck ass party. And whether the DLC exists in name or not, they're still around and still fucking us royally.
I want purity? It's better than hanging around with homophobic assholes and wall street scumbags. You're welcome to your big tent. I have no room for bigots and outsourcers in mine. |

8. Excellent. So why do we even PPR people here for having "right wing opinions"?
How do we define "right wing opinions" in a way that doesn't violate the beauty and diversity of the Democratic Party?
I mean, really, you can't even find it in you to criticize this idiot Cardinal who has a record of opposing GLBT and women's rights. You think we're not diverse if we have clowns like this in our midst. If we must have a sectarian prayer opening, why couldn't we ask for a LIBERAL clergyman... or clergywoman? Ah yes, that might not be inclusive of right wing misogynists. ![]() |

9. Progressivism shouldn't require not being pro-life
Why should someone have to choose between progressivism and pro-life?

10. It's not that. It's the anti-GLBT and everything else, too.
Also:
In another thread I asked if anyone has ever met a pro-life leftist. I haven't met that species of creature in several years and I talk to politically-minded people all the time. You can almost forgive the pro-life leftists of the past. Well, at least George Carlin's condemnations of hypocrisy wouldn't apply. |

supposed to stand for.

17. Would it be okay if an anti-choice log cabin republican defected and was invited to speak...
in favor of marriage equality?
Would his attitudes toward poor people and women matter? Should poor homeless women and their children boycott catholic soup kitchens? Is the world more complicated than to affirm one answer? YES |
