It seems Pres. Trump wants a militarized Fourth of July celebration more similar to the kinds of events overseen by dictators like his buddy Kim Jong-un. I prefer the Boston Pops, hot dogs, and Uncle Sams on stilts.

I still remember Reagan disinviting the Beach Boys (!) from playing in the Mall on July 4th in the early 80's.

(94,501 posts)It was the self-serving Secretary of the Interior, who looked like an idiot when it turned out that Nancy Reagan was a big Beach Boys fan.

(9,426 posts)have "leaders" who would put a stop to this insane pandering to himself. He keeps doing more and more things that should never be allowed. No other president was this egotistical. No wonder he thinks he is untouchable. The wimps in the gop see no wrong in anything he does. He is starting to make Kim look like the adult on the world stage.

(6,539 posts)According to the obituary for the conductor, Arthur Fiedler:
400,000 at Bicentennial Concert
If one event could be said to sum up the grandfatherly, white-haired conductor's extraordinary popular appeal, it may have been the Bicentennial concert that he led on the Fourth of July in 1976, on Boston's Esplanade. An estimated 400,000 cheering Fiedler admirers crammed themselves into the outdoor area for a free program of patriotic tunes, in what was probably the largest gathering for a musical event in the nation's history.

They still repeat this experience in Boston and sometimes on CBS but nothing compares with that night. With all the hoopla surrounding the nation's bicentennial celebration, it was the Boston Pops who were a wonderful icing on the cake.
I couldn't find it on youtube, although they do have the 1812 Overture from that night. The comments below the video are great.
