1. "Alston has a concealed carry permit that is valid for two guns"

What possible reason would this ordinary citizen have for carrying around two guns?? I guess we know now and it makes no sense, yet again, that this continues to be legal.

4. This isn't the wild West and they had tougher gun laws in Tombstone, Arizona

No citizen has any reason to carry around a gun. They are used for one reason only and then we're surprised when that happens?? And I have dealt with guns, learned to shoot when I was a kid, and I would never consider carrying one around, good grief!

5. I take a little different view: 2nd amendment rights are trumped by ...

by public health concerns.

It gives me a jolt when I see public carry. And I see a lot of it out here.

I quit going to our church when I found out the council authorized several members to conceal carry in church.

6. Yikes! That would certainly give me a jolt!

I'd probably run and duck for cover! Back in the day, I participated on two rifle teams. The guns were always locked up when not in use - ammunition separately - and when the teams traveled the guns remained in their cases until we were ready to use them.

Before we were even allowed to pick up a gun, we had to learn - and understand - numerous safety rules. It frightens me to think of anyone who isn't sufficiently trained can own and use a gun. These days, I believe in strict gun control and would not own a gun. As we know, accidents can happen - with deadly results. And a gun in the wrong hands is deadly.

7. Sounds like a "well regulated militia", the part of the 2nd Asmendment ...

the gun lobby and gun nuts gloss right over.

If we at least had gun safety classes in schools or if the NRA (former member here) at least followed it's own mandate to promote gun safety and responsible firearm ownership at least my concerns regarding public health and public safety were being responded to, I'd go back to more private ownership. Right now? No, we have a deadly crisis.

I used to believe in non registration. Now I'll never go back to that. We need strict registration and a national data base that actually does help keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill and the criminal.

A good place to start is if there's a peace warrant of some sort against you, the police at least hold your guns until your issues are sorted out. That alone would have a big impact on the murder rate by firearms.

8. That makes perfect sense to me.

And times have certainly changed. My mother talked about an uncle who kept his gun in the corner of the room and the kids were warned never to touch it - and they didn't. Good luck with that, these days!

I also was a member of the NRA back in the day (though I'm loathe to admit that here), but it was not today's NRA. Back then, we were required to belong to shoot competitively on the school team, the coach just signed us up and we didn't think much about it.

These days, I've checked, and there is no longer any school team. I was the first and only girl on my team and, as second man , that was my school sport, I earned a varsity letter! There were no incidents during my tenure there, but I cannot imagine how it could possibly pass muster in today's climate.

I learned to shoot to summer camp - all girls - and I did well so I continued. The rules were very strict there, too - and I never remember any incidents there, either. You had to prove that you knew and understood all the safety rules before you were allowed to even pick up a gun. The rifle range is gone from there, too, now - and I don't blame them, I cannot imagine the liability, these days.
