(14,488 posts)I'm so glad your disease was treated in good time, whereas my friend's was not.
We need better ways to recognize the symptoms of cancers of all type before they are past the point of being un-treatable. We also need improvements in our medical care system that would make routine preventative care much easier for the elderly. This experience had taught me some huge lessons on life.
Receive every new day as a precious gift.......

(56,996 posts)(in a week) as I noticed it: a little dribble of blood in my urine - in 2012. They found the cancer looking at something else in a CATscan. I had no indications for bladder cancer except a long exposure to second hand smoke, about something I used to make fun of people over. Shame on me.
Ironically the cancer I have/had doesn't usually make tumors, it stays close in profile to the bladder liner. That unusual tumor showed up
I've had five bladder surgeries, an extra long BCG regimen and a half of my colon removed (I have a semi colon) which kinda complicated this last mamalama surgery while they got the colon surgeon into the OR to roadmap what they did and this las team had to trim the colon further for the bladder removal re-plumbing job.
Me and cancer are at least in a draw and eternal vigilance is required, we may have completely gotten it, we may have a skirmish or two more.
I'm up for the fight. I know I still have more good years. I'll get to see Trump dumped and a Democratic renaissance over the next eight years and that would be a satisfactory slipping into the next Bardo.

(14,488 posts)Thanks for sharing your story. My friend was not so lucky. She had an odd bump on the back of her head and was planning to see a dermatologist soon. As it turned out, that lump was brain cancer spreading outside her skull which was a metastisization of a cancer in one of her lungs. Cancer was also spreading to her bones and lymph nodes so by the time it was discovered, it was too late. I lost her only about 2-1/2 months after the discovery.
There's a bizarre story behind the discovery: I was taking her for blood work for an unrelated issue and her rollator toppled over in the parking lot, striking the back of her head and she was taken to ER. A cat scan then revealed the mass in her brain....and here we are. She had already survived breast cancer and open heart surgery and was only 74 when she passed.
Following old southern tradition from back in the 50s and 60s, she and I both were smokers for many years. Chest x-rays were common in family doctor's offices for a long time, but now they're farming it all out so you have to go to a hospital for that. As a result, neither of us had a chest x-ray for many years. Needless to say, I plan on getting one very soon (or whatever test they're using these days for lung scan).
I hope you can have periodic precautionary tests done to be sure everything is still OK, if nothing else for emotional and mental relief. Perhaps someday there will be a simple doctor's office test developed that will indicate a warning flag of possible cancer activity in our body.
Best of luck!.......

(3,385 posts)I think pretty much everyone I know has been close to someone who had to deal with cancer. My wife is a cancer survivor (thankfully, it was thyroid cancer, the most survivable kind, but I was scared nonetheless). My dad had skin cancer a couple times, but hes still alive and kicking. A couple good friends have died from more serious forms of cancer. But theres no kind of cancer that isnt terrifying.
It takes courage to talk about this, and a lot more courage to fight through it. Bravo to you. Ill keep you in my prayers.
