Around here, only about 8% of cases bring criminal charges. And more than half of the people seeking protection orders (which is a civil action) do not receive them.

Some advocate once claimed it was the "leading cause of death" for women 18-25 years old. I'm dubious, but it's one of the statistics that "seems" right.
