Epstein case: judge agrees to keep documents on 2008 plea deal secret

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/jul/27/jeffrey-epstein-2008-documents-secret
A judge in New York has granted a request from prosecutors to keep secret documents relating to Jeffrey Epstein’s controversial 2008 sexual abuse plea deal, on the grounds that the materials could hamper their investigation of others in the financier’s milieu.

The documents, which will be shared with Epstein’s attorneys, are believed to concern not only the deal itself, which allowed Epstein to plead guilty to low-level state solicitation charges, but also a clause that granted immunity to any and all potential co-conspirators and named four women suspected of facilitating or participating in alleged crimes against minors.

The documents may also shed light on the 2008 deal, which was kept secret from accusers for nearly a year in what some claim was a violation of the Crime Victims’ Rights Act. Controversy over the deal forced the resignation earlier this month of the US labor secretary, Alex Acosta, who was US attorney in Miami at the time.

In a court filing, prosecutors with the southern district of New York argued that the materials could “affect the privacy and confidentiality of individuals … [and that] would impede, if prematurely disclosed, the government’s ongoing investigation of uncharged individuals”.

The part that really irritates me is the clause about "any and all POTENTIAL co-conspirators."

And uponit raises a good point about Barr's involvement.

I want to see justice actually WORK in this case. Because if it fails here, the precedent, the message it sends, the potential it raises is chilling. Epstein has engaged in human sex trafficking of minor children and everyone is dancing around HIS issues. WTF ? We should be gagging on this.

Also, yesterday, it was revealed that he had been "injured" in his cell. Marks, bruises or lacerations were discovered around his neck. There was no further information about that or how it happened. Either the inmates took matters into their own hands, or Epstein is going for an Oscar for performance art in an attempt to get himself released to "safer" conditions. They cannot release this guy into house arrest. His is a HUGE flight risk.

Justice delayed is justice denied.

For now. The need to investigate others who could also face prosecution or help nail down prosecutions currently outweighs the public's need to know. This may change, but for the moment, I'm comfortable with law enforcement carrying on their work.

I believe it is Berman at SDNY, and it's very possible that Barr has compromised the case - for at least CERTAIN INDIVIDUAL(S).

This give the Republicans time to hide evidence. Especially Mitch, his part in all this just came out, he may not have even started hiding anything yet. Now he has time.

I said this very thing when epstein was arrested. Its a federal case. Doesnt go forward without Barr's ok. Coincidentally, docs regardin g epstein and his pals were going to be released.

Now they're not. AND, the feds raided epsteins house in NYC. If there was any evidence there that could have incriminated trumplethinskin, it has neen "disappeared" by now.

What a bunch of scumbags.

But it might have been crafted when the lawsuit to release moved forward and exposure was imminent. It actually makes more sense in terms of timing. Maybe Cohen said the evidence was in the safe. It's so effed up. Scumbags indeed.
