(4,516 posts)Buddha nature. That is, we all have the potential of being really great people. Even the worst of us can change. I think it is better to see the good in people rather dwell on the bad. There will always be ass holes but there will always be saints too.
Just look at how we are all touched by the horrible conditions of the immigrants and want to help put and end to it. That is part of our Buddha nature.

(11,726 posts)Trump theoretically can change, but he won't and he will NEVER be a great person. He is to damaged, too far gone, and lacks the ability for introspection that is necessary for change.
Other people I can go along with.

(35,041 posts)While we are discussing this, there are how many places, how many discussions that are indeed treating non-white ethnic as homogeneous groups?
Trump got elected because there were enough people who are scared of the 'other', by painting them as hostile groups without individuality AKA homogeneous. Mexicans are rapists, Muslims are out to get you, etc. Nobody over on the other side of the aisle had this same discussion about 'them' that we are having now about 'us', I can assure you of that.
We have to subvert this, we have to twist the things that Trump used and ran on, this was one of them.

(35,041 posts)It's not biological, it's not natural, and it's certainly not divine.
And the same thing can be said about being black or any other race.
We CAN say "wypipo" are the people who call 911 as a black person removal service, who call it when white people trash buildings and turn over cars a 'sport celebration' but a 'riot' when black people do the same, who treat violence from non-white people as a war or clash of civilizations but see the violence from a white person as a response to horrible treatment in his life and that he is a victim too in a sense.
White people are the people who are outraged about the things 'wypipo' are OK with.
I remember this same discussion that you are being asked, I remember all of the DUers of color who responded to me, they were agreeing with that what I said above, that "white people" is NOT "wypipo".
Shame and disgust, it's the best way to fight back against the BBQ Becky's and these people who push fascism because of "economic anxiety", and that shame and disgust needs to come from white people.
But it seems like most of us white people don't want to shame racists and express open disgust of them... most of us don't want to cause trouble.
But some of us do like causing trouble.

(13,390 posts)Without whiteness there are not other races. And it is a fact that people who are not white are treated as if they lack humanity.
White people often don't want to admit to being white because it is a beneficial characteristic. Why would someone want to be as vulnerable to police stops as those who are 91 percent more likely to be in my area?
Whiteness is the default and superior social position. To deny it is to say racism does not exist. Denial allows it to flourish. It's no accident that we saw it surface at a time when many people claimed to be color blind.

(14,853 posts)... so I've been privy to the mindset of other white people who voted for Trump.
In other words, based on my appearance and mannerisms, they assume that I'm just like them!
Most Trump supporters are right-wing authoritarians.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-wing_authoritarianism
Right-wing authoritarians want society and social interactions structured in ways that increase uniformity and minimize diversity. In order to achieve that, they tend to be in favour of social control, coercion and the use of group authority to place constraints on the behaviours of people such as political dissidents and ethnic minorities. These constraints might include restrictions on immigration, limits on free speech and association and laws regulating moral behaviour. It is the willingness to support or take action that leads to increased social uniformity that makes right-wing authoritarianism more than just a personal distaste for difference. Right-wing authoritarianism is characterized by obedience to authority, moral absolutism, racial and ethnic prejudice and intolerance and punitiveness towards dissidents and deviants. In parenting, right-wing authoritarians value children's obedience, neatness and good manners.

If I asked you what most defines Donald Trump supporters, what would you say? Theyre white? Theyre poor? Theyre uneducated?
Youd be wrong.
In fact, Ive found a single statistically significant variable predicts whether a voter supports Trumpand its not race, income or education levels: Its authoritarianism.
Most of them don't blame people for the color of their skin, which can't be controlled, but rather their "disobedience" to their white cultural norms. It just happens that non-white people tend to have different cultures.
I have worked alongside authoritarian white people who get very upset about people who expose their underwear beneath their pants. It's like getting angry about long-haired hippies from the 60's! Good grief. How is that a danger?! Yet that's how their minds work.
I was cringing during the repeated media coverage of BLM protestors, by the way. Blocking roads and the like? That sort of thing just draws borderline authoritarians to insanity!
These two fictional characters from "No Country for Old Men" would surely be Trump voters if they were real people:

(90,616 posts)I was with a small group of friends tonight, just social, but the topic of Trump and his racism came up more than once, like picking a scab. It hurts. It hurts, and not just for us political types.
My feeling is -- and others agreed -- that with Obama elected twice, I thought this country had grown up, or was growing up. Some pundit (no doubt white) opined at the time that "racism was dead," and I knew it was bullshit immediately. But I thought we were growing up.
Trump's presidency, however obtained, has shown that a considerable minority are only too happy to act out their worst. I thought the Civil War was ancient history, but apparently not for them.
So WTF, my fellow Americans: you make the rest of us feel ashamed to be associated with you.
Just bear in mind, though, that the Trump mob is a minority. They lost the popular vote, and that means a lot, when assessing the damage. And according to what I've been reading, the "statistic" that the majority of white women voted for the bastard is more than likely a self-serving meme than an actual fact. (Ask who that meme serves, and the answer is: more than you would think.)
The people who put Barack Obama into office twice are still here, and still diverse as ever, which means a lot of us are ... white.

(142 posts)racism was over because the country elected Barack Obama. Obama won because there were enough white people who joined with other non-white people to help him get elected. But the vast majority of white people voted for McCain in 2008 and Trump in 2016.

(14,489 posts)The seven deadly sins are color blind.
Denial of climate change, high crime levels, greed, vulgarity, selfishness, self-centeredness and short-sightedness, cruelty to our fellow-man, still heavily driven by our primitive instincts, wasting of natural resources, blindness to consequences of our actions, misogyny......all those seem to affect all races, sexes, creeds and cultures to varying degree.
White people - by accident of evolution and history - at this point in time happen to have more assets and hence more economic and political power, so we're far more likely to abuse the power and created lots of WTFs.

(9 posts)Saying WTF (fill in the racial blank) paints with far too broad a brush.
I say WTF (small-minded/violent/hateful ethnic clique) often.
I say WTF (small-minded/violent/hateful racial clique) often.
I say WTF (small-minded/violent/hateful political clique) often.
I say WTF (small-minded/violent/hateful religious clique) often.
There are many other cliques, but you get the idea.
Such sub-groups within modern societies almost always have participants that cross racial lines.
Skin color is a poor choice on which to predict (or criticize) behavior.
To say WTF about an entire demographic only serves to illustrate how limited one's intellect becomes when hemmed in by artificial constructs defined by clique(s).
I say WTF based on the displayed content of character, be that of the individual or the clique.

(22,912 posts)White racism is profoundly troubling to me. It makes me constantly question basic human nature because, being white, I spend a whole lot of time in the presence of whites. All of my white friends are anti-racists, but I also obviously have many white acquaintances; neighbors, co-workers, extended family members etc. I know them, and by and large that are not literally stupid, nor are they fundamentally incapable of caring about the suffering of others even across racial ethnic and religious lines. But as soon as race extends beyond literal person to person contact with people who they personally know, in the abstract the disease seeps in and manifests in ways that do make me think "WTF white people".

(13,390 posts)I also often mutter "white people suck." As I did when I read through this thread. It reminds me of the "I don't see color" dismissal of the all too real experiences people who are not white have to put up with.

Or think every Muslim in the world wants to kill us.
Or tweet about how crappy a city is because its representative chided them for their terrible behavior.
