If the economy is good, the president takes the credit and if the economy is bad, his opponents bash him for it. The reality is that there is little a president, by himself, can do to move the needle.

That was always Tucker Carlson's line whenever someone made an issue of the high gas prices (then, too), hiring slump, etc. during Shrub's reign.
