As for Putin's reasons, pick one or pick all: Denmark supported Finland in the Winter War and refused to recognize Soviet control over the Baltics (not the Balkans as trump would have it ), they are the obvious choke point in the Baltic Sea for the Russians, have world-leading support for renewables (which always gets Putin's attention), and were considered by the Russians to be a weak link in Nato.

The modest missile defense system went ahead in 2016 through phase three pretty much without anyone noticing.

That's still just not enough until you think about who might be negotiating a new Arctic resource and sovereignty treaty in the next decade or two.
