Born To Run The Numbers reports on a sustained, civil, and wide-ranging conversation with an upscale Trump supporter... and sees real dangers -- for Donald Trump:

Excerpts: "As recently as 2012, a spirited discussion of politics was a fair way to pass time ...I miss such conversations, because I ache to understand why so many people who voted for Trump plan on doing so again in 2020. Finally, I had a real conversation..."
"It was with the exact cohort of Republican that I find to be troubling
the citizens in affluent suburban towns. These are not the people who seethe with angry victimhood about losing the family breadwinners manufacturing job, not people who dismiss climate science, not people who would stand silent if a local town official spoke crudely about or molested their daughters..."
"...her infirm grip on the social policy issues of the Trump presidency -- and her efforts to minimize or excuse his handling of each could have all been simply because these issues were not what truly mattered to her. She was essentially admitting to being a single issue candidate on the issue of the economy. Her statement that 'if one of those progressives gets nominated, I will probably vote for Trump,' was specifically targeted at the economic proposals of those candidates: healthcare, tax policy, and -- in her view -- the intent of turning the United States into a more socialist state. If even a small chunk of Donald Trumps base thinks the way this person does, it is bad news for Donald Trump. Because the lady we spoke with was essentially saying to Donald Trump that as long as the economy is good for her, shes good with Donald Trump."
"Those economic Republicans who believe in math, science, and inverted yield curves may be feeling sucker-punched that Donald Trumps erratic economic policies are contributing to global economic destabilization and triggering a downturn."

(9,113 posts)And that theyd have had the good sense and patriotism to see that Donald Trump would be a disaster and either vote for Hillary or stay home.
2016 convinced me that if such Republicans still exist, they constitute a far, far smaller percentage of their partys numbers than I once thought they did. To make a wild guess, Id say no more than thirty percent, and that estimate may be far too high. The other seventy percent are haters, Religious Righties, or vacuum-brained talk-radio fans.
If they sit out this next election, Wonderful! But I think Democratic candidates would be better off courting Democratic constituencies.

(778 posts)Whether she thought Trump was a great business person would have been an excellent question to ask, but it did not come up. My guess is that she would have said that he was a legit billionaire and would have blamed CNN and the NYT for giving a distorted view of his failures and shortcomings as a business person.

(32,950 posts)Snip1-the citizens in pleasant and affluent suburban towns that breathe and thrive off the a bustling business metropolis a train ride away.
Snip2-people described an underlying bifurcation in the Republican Party between the Tea Party extremists and Rockefeller or centrist Republicans.
Those women in scrubs surrounding trump in Dayton, many of this type of Republicians are those women. I worked with dozens of those 'economic republicians', kind and caring to the patients, talented at their jobs, but still economic Republicans with limited knowledge of and limited interest in social issues.
This article rings true.

Affluent? Perhaps
Intelligent? No!
The economy is riding the same trend lines predicted in mid 2015.
Anything good is independent of this administration

(253 posts)My area is filled with suburban women/moms who are a one-issue voter (actually two if you count racism). They do indeed think T.rump is an astute businessman fueled by his Apprentice image. They blame the MSM for his faults and sins and in fact never hear about have of the horrors that occur. I have cut all ties but have heard one woman did say to me "why do you care so much about all of this?" (Meaning his lies, atrocities). Yes they are all about the economy and as the live in their bubble I don't think any recession will directly affect them.
