My mom has been a teacher for 30 years. Now, because of mass shootings, this is part of her back to school training: learning how to staunch a giant sucking bullet hole.

1. Price we must pay so Bubba can have gunz that get him tingly all over.

That is really sad, the training they require nowadays.

21. Oh, boy.....

That's a Florida man story just waiting to happen.

No offense intended, Florida people. It's just a side affect of an exploding population. Back in the day it was...California man.

6. Or so Bubba can shoot someone ("legally") and be a HERO!

I live in Texas where there are lots of rednecks armed and loaded.
The women talk about how afraid they are and the men think they are going to be on
the news for heroism. They are just itching to shoot someone.

27. Trump & guns

I'd almost be willing to bet Trump has never shot anything beyond a cap gun in his life, never mind actually having held a real gun. Maybe at his military school, but never since. The same with his 'raking forests' nonsense - I doubt he's ever (at least voluntarily) gone on a hike through a real forest/wilderness area either. And a walk through Central Park in NYC doesn't count - though I'd doubt he's ever even done that.

13. I'm going to be sceptical.

And think that this isn't required of all teachers, but perhaps a select cohort. I've had CPR training, because some kids can drop dead of a heart attack. Or teachers.

Or that this is one of those elective professional development trainings. I'm required to have 30 hours/year, and while my school and district provides some I can just as easily sign up for all sort of training that give continuing professional development training. Some of that includes first aid. Some isn't pretty.

(At the same time, some of it is pretty vapid.)

Tony Dokoupil tends to like being sensationalistic. I don't know that he'd give information that is true but would reduce the sensationalism of his report.

25. There is no good reason that any teacher should have to learn this/

CPR is a whole other thing. That could be unavoidable, gun violence could be decreased.

3. It's so weird that this is happening in the age of helicopter parenting

So many parents micromanage every aspect of their kids' lives and schedules, so they get into a good college yada yada yada....

But somehow we just have to accept that the small but very real risk of suffering a SUCKING CHEST WOUND is the price of going to school. Just part of what it means to get an education in the United States.

I know that 90% of us are outraged about this.... So for once I don't blame an ovine population for going along with this bullshit. But what has this nation become?

10. Helicopter parenting is the problem.

The parents are too busy micro-managing the wrong stuff instead of teaching the children how to live in and navigate the real world.

5. When I was in school during WWII the teachers had to

figure out what to do with us in case of an air raid---and we had frequent air raid drills---always something.

8. Remember those "Duck and Cover" drills

when you ducked under your desk at school and covered your head when/if the A-bomb was dropped? That defined the Cold War era. We practiced that drill at the beginning of each school year and at least once a month.

11. And it was shown on tv sporadically.

With a siren going off.
There the "Public Service" announcements showing kids doing duck and cover
and there the more sonoously audio only one: "This is a drill. This is only a drill. If it had been the real thing", etc etc.

Then our parents wondered why kids panicked when they heard a police or fire siren.

18. I teach high school.

There were rumors swirling around our state that something was going to happen in school yesterday. Unsubstantiated rumors of violence bubble up occasionally, especially thanks to social media, so I rarely take much stock in it. But while getting ready for work yesterday, I thought, "Sandals would go great with this outfit... On second thought, I better wear shoes in case I have to run."

And it was driving home that it hit me how ingrained these atrocities have become in our culture. I select my footwear based on whether there could be a shooting or not. I should be thinking about my lesson plans, emails, or just the mundane things of getting up in the morning, but not what I need to do to survive.

It should not be normal.

23. mass protests

strike, walk out, etc... all teachers, parents and students should refuse to open schools until guns are regulated/registered, red flag laws are in effect, background checks enforced and AR-15 (and other) rifles are taken off the streets...

just an idea
