Romney's Russian Threat

Listening to Romney talk yet again about a Russian threat, I'd love to know whether he's hopelessly trapped in a 1980s cold war novel, or if he suspects something else, based on info he picked up as an inside trader venture capitalist. That thought has been percolating in my mind since Romney first mentioned it in March,

Today when I read XemaSab's thread about the Arctic ice melting within the next few years (http://www.democraticunderground.com/10021249269), I went Google diving for info on X's claim, and I saw a page entitled "Who Own The Arctic?" (http://geology.com/articles/who-owns-the-arctic.shtml). The pages discusses which countries will have a coastal claim to the oil and mineral rights in the reqion. I found this map of the Arctic there, and immediately remembered Romney's Russia talk.

If the Arctic ice melts quickly as the planet heats, the pole will become habitable, opening vast areas. With the ice gone, trade increases between countries that were previously isolated, new alliances are built, old ones weakened. The old world will change.

Will this be the map of the new world?

The New World

Russia scores BIG. Canada as well, and the US a bit. Norway, Sweden, and Finland will all benefit. Greenland will (once again) live up to its name, and Denmark will prosper.

So was Romney thinking about control of all of those assets when he spoke about Russia? Or his inner Walter Mitty taking over, and he's imagining himself as Mitt Rombourney - Cold War Super Spy? His words were that Russia was "without question our No. 1 geopolitical foe?"

I think Romney's been looking at maps, planning how Bain can leverage a portion of the Arctic. After all, we all know the Cold War is over, and the US won...

We do know that, right?

Countries that all have socialized medicine, will now have access to the 25% of the Earth's remaining oil and 75% of our planetary supply of fresh (frozen) water. The focus on the Middle East will wane because as the planet warms up it will all become a wasteland. Oil and water in the Arctic, controlled by Socialists, will drive global politics and economics for a generation at least.

2050 will be a very different place.
