Tucker Carlson Signals Shift In Trump Defense
October 4, 2019 at 9:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard

Tucker Carlson and Neil Patel: “Donald Trump should not have been on the phone with a foreign head of state encouraging another country to investigate his political opponent, Joe Biden. Some Republicans are trying, but there’s no way to spin this as a good idea.”

“Like a lot of things Trump does, it was pretty over-the-top. Our leaders’ official actions should not be about politics. Those two things need to remain separate. Once those in control of our government use it to advance their political goals, we become just another of the world’s many corrupt countries. America is better than that.”

Benjy Sarlin: “There’s a pretty massive tactical signal here, which is to pivot away from defending the behavior (which has been a brutal slog so far for those who’ve tried) and instead toward arguing impeachment goes too far.

It is kind of a stretch to say that an impeachment of Trump would go „too far.“

Just in case the impeachment inquiry gains even more traction as more and more evidence of Trump's malfeasance is exposed, Fox needs to have a path forward. If they slowly lead their audience, the rubes won't see how they're being manipulated yet again.

When the impeachment process moves to the full House, Fox will need to keep their pathways open. It's all business to the Murdochs.

If the wind seems to be blowing in the „wrong“ direction, Fox can always shift and say, well, of course, if he did THAT......

4. Impeach on a curve..

Bill Clinton should have known better. He was impeached for lying about a blowjob.

Trump is different. He doesn't know better. He didn't know that using taxpayers money to swap for information from foreign countries on his political opponents was wrong.

Is that the argument?

8. He knew when he just recently asked China for help?

He asked Russia, Ukraine, and just kidding around, China. No, he didn't know any better doesn't stick. He still thinks he can go even further, challenge everything to its breaking point. Especially laws that govern regular people.
Fox knows plenty of independents voted for trump to give him a try and are not happy at all so they are trying to say that he is just stupid. Independents don't want stupid. IMO.

They'll argue that what Trump did was horrible. But removing him would be too divisive for the nation.

And when they make that comment we need to ask them if they plan on supporting his reelection? If they say yes, that contradicts their impeachment reasoning.

It seems to me if they want to make that argument they need some big time players to challenge him for the nomination.

14. I think what we are seeing is more like a shift in Tucker's defense

Imagine what will happen if Tucker is on the Trump bandwagon when it goes over a cliff. He is giving himself a way out when the inevitable happens. It's a typical Tucker Carlson chickenshit move where he gets to ride the fence so he can claim the intellectual high ground when Trump flames out. Even he has to know it's a very strong possibility and he's already planning his strategy post Trump.
