Scoop: Trump's private concerns of an impeachment legacy
President Trump has told friends and allies he worries about the stain impeachment will leave on his legacy.
Driving the news: In a phone call with House Republicans on Friday, Trump articulated why he really doesn't want this. Impeachment, Trump said, is a "bad thing to have on your resume," according to a source on the call. Two other sources on the call confirmed the substance of the comment, but one said they recalled Trump phrasing it as "you don't want it [impeachment] on your resume."
Why it matters: These two Trump quotes might seem like throwaways on what was a lengthy and discursive call with allies. But sources who have discussed impeachment candidly with the president say these comments perfectly encapsulate how Trump feels about it: He believes it could help him get re-elected and win back the House. But he doesn't want the history books recording Donald Trump as an impeached president.
Between the lines: Some prominent political analysts, including the New York Times' Ross Douthat, have speculated that the president might welcome articles of impeachment. Sources close to the president say this interpretation is dead wrong. Trump adamantly does not want to be impeached because he cares, above all, about his legacy.

(12,712 posts)When you study tRump there seems to be evidence of multiple, even severe, personality disorders and the usual list is well known. Considering his life, those disorders have been nurtured and protected by his circumstances and environment. This situation is remarkably different. You could even call it biting off more than one can chew, simply by comparison.
On one hand, the narcissism encapsulates him and drives him, so you would expect him to cling and fight to the very end. However, he is also largely a person who seems courageous and bold superficially and by way of abstraction, but that also might reflect a deeper fear, vulnerability and even cowardice internally.
On the other hand, even though it is evident that there are not many places on his bed sheets left to stain, there are still some factors concerning impeachment that could possibly drive him to resign.
The gravity and public spectacle may be what concerns him as far as his narcissistic evaluation of his legacy is concerned. Narcissists can and do move on to greener pastures when they have been caught and cornered, in some cases, even if they don't like it. The kind of environment and control they require can play into their decisions.
Also, the prospect of having to testify at hearings would put him in the hot seat in a controlled environment for long periods of time which I think would make him very uncomfortable. I base that on having seen some footage of him being questioned in a legal setting and have noticed a very radical change in his demeanor and behavior. So, resignation is not off the table.
Unfortunately, most of what we observe is his public face, (the salesman, bloviator, reality TV host) though we do get an occasional trickle of information about his temperament, etc., from various sources.
I keep in mind that without more access to his personal and private behavior, it is not a good idea to base our estimations on the spectacle he provides alone. In fact, there are some psychological cues that might indicate some opposites in his personality that his behavior compensates for. He has is "tells" and part of his strategy is to evade detection and hide things well.

Nancy, kick him the fuck out of the Office he stole from us, and make the GOP Senate own keeping him there.

(25,241 posts)that he's worried about his legacy.
His legacy was cast well before he ever became president and it went further downhill since then. Impeached or not he will go down in history as the worst U. S. president and a complete fool and loser.
Actually when you think about his worry - it's probably the sanest thought he's had in years.
